Do I have a bad Stator?

I was running my 1994 Evinrude 115 at 5000 rpms and it completely shut down, didn't sputter or stall out. It was very sudden. It started up again, but would only go about 2000 rpms for the rest of the day. I took it out the next day and was able to creep up to about 3800 rpms. Does this sound like a stator problem? Is there a way to test a stator? I hate to start buying parts before I know what the problem is.

Thanks

Omega27,

Did you check the kill switch. Maybe you accidently jarred it loose. How did it run when you started it back up. Did it miss or what? Have you performed maintenance on it recently? Have you changed out the impellar or clean out hte carbs thorouly? I would check your spark first. Make sure you pull the plug out and keep the boot on and have someone crank over the motor and see if you get a thick blue snapping spark on all 4 cylinders. Also check the fuel delivery system. Make sure your filters are all cleanedand the fuel lines aren't hard and nonpliable. If that checks out make sure all f your battery connectiomns are clean and tight.

Yes you definitly want to check the spark. But you want to make sure they will jump at least a 1/2" gap with a thick hot lighting like spark.

Jarring the kill switch lose will surely kill the engine and if not replaced, the engine will not restart.

From the way it stopped, I would think it is ignition related. Check the spark first and go from there.
