I have a 1997 4.3L Mercruiser in a Sea Ray 190.
I just bot it last season, had only 30 hrs. on it and everything went pretty well last year in the water, only a power steering pulley coming loose from its shaft (a mere $200 bill from the shop to replace PS pump and belt :( ) Anyway, The engine almost always diesels after turning ignition off, even after letting it idle a little after coming down from speed. Otherwise seems to run just fine. Is this anything I should be concerned about? Or should I just add some fuel additive?

You might be able to get Mercruiser to pay for the repairs. They had a problem with those fiber centered pullies and for awhile, paid to replace the pully with an all metal one complete with new belt. I know, I did a few for some of my customer.

Thanks, Capt Ken. Do you know of any other problems with that year/model I'm likely to encounter?

Re: "Dieseling"

Unless you have a HOT SPOT in the engine, 99 out of 100 times the cause of "Dieseling" is due to the throttle butterfly not closeing completely when the engine is turned off. Check to see if your set-up has a throttle solinoid. If you do, likely it's not working.

Re: "Dieseling"

I had the same problem last summer with my 2001 4.3 mercruiser alpha 1. Put in a cooler running thermostat and used premium gas. Problem solved except on those really hot days ,when idling for a minute after coming down from speed seemed to help.

Re: "Dieseling"

Several things can cause DIESELING. the most common is bad gas or bad timing. I think what Ken is talking about is the nylon timing pulleys. thats not good. if you can change the pulley,s to steel it would be a much better deal,,,,,,,,,,good,,,,,,,,,,,,,,luck.............

Re: "Dieseling"

Thanks guys. I'm going to put it in the shop and have them do a bunch of the maintence stuff. I'll have them check the timing, maybe try the cooler thermostat. I'm still new to owning a boat and I'd like to see someone else do some of the basic, as well as more advanced stuff, before I try and mess it up. Been around em all my life but never had to be the one keeping it up!
I'm going to ask the mechanic @ my shop if I can come watch a little.
Thanks again.

Re: "Dieseling"

That 4.3 is a Good engine. It's faster than Most small v-8s on the water. Only run Premium Gas in that engine. Reset the Timeing & run a can of carberater cleaner with the next fill-up. happy Boating

Thanks for the link jlshields!! I'll check the timing and throttle cables and then if that doesn't work, maybe go to the cooler thermostat and/or colder plugs.
