Uncle gave me 1990Searay. Mercruiser 5.0 V8.
it was sitting winterized since fall 2017. I dont know boats. Got my info from here and YouTube (thank you everyone! ).
I pulled the lower unit. New impeller, seals, and gear fluid. After reinstalling the lower unit when I went to move the throttle it was extremely tight. I think the shifter gear (if that's what its called) is misaligned inside the lower and upper unit. You can hear the prop clicking in both directions when turned by hand. I take it I need to drop the unit a few inches, put the throttle in forward, turn the shaft until the prop only moves in forward direction and then reinstall lower unit. Is that correct?
BUT HEAR IS MY PROBLEM: I thought it would be safe to start in neutral and leave it in neutral. Is it safe? Anyway I threw on the muffs and tried to start her up. Couple cranks and nothing ‐ I pumped the throttle twice - tried again and got one 'turn with combustion' - couple more pumps and now it seemed to start for about 3 seconds (prop started spinning and water spraying I was told) BUT I TURNED THE IGNITION OFF AT THAT MOMENT because my helper (who was instructed to yell if anything looked wrong) decided to yell about something irrelevant at that very moment so i shut it off.
Now, despite hours of trying I can't get any combustion. Any ideas? Flooded maybe? How to unflood? I tried leaving the throttle in full forward for an hour because I read that could unflood the carburetor. Didn't work.
FYI : prior to starting i pumped out old gas and put new gas in (10 gallons). I put a new fuel water separator dry. But before I tried to start it I put fresh gas in it but to my surprise t
some gas had made it's way to it already. I plan to do an oil change after getting it running for 5 or 10 minutes.
Any suggestions or diagnostic speculation would be greatly appreciated. I have NO money for a mechanic. Please and thank you in advance!

Stop do not attempt to start until you get the shifting problem fixed. If the shifter is in a bind and prop is clicking both ways you could eat your lower unit up if you continue...

Thank you! That definitely saved me some time and money which I don't have. I'll get everything aligned properly before trying to start it but in the meantime hopefully someone has answers on why I had combustion and now I don't.
