What I wanted to do is define what the word fisherman means. I used a Funk and Wagnalls standard desk dictionary and looked it up.
FISHERMAN-One who fishes as an occupation or for sport.
HMMM but what is fishes? Could not find out exactly but as it is derived from the word fish I used the applicable definition.
FISHES-To catch or try to catch fish.
So we know have a complete definition and for this purpose I am leaving out any future reference about those that do it as an occupation.
FISHERMAN-One who catches or tries to catch fish as a sport.
But is the definition complete yet?
CATCH-To take seize or come upon.
SPORT-That which amuses in general; Diversion; Pastime
So now we have:
FISHERMAN- One who takes or tries to take fish as an amusement, diversion or pastime.
I think we are getting close here.
AMUSEMENT-That which diverts or entertains.
DIVERSION-To amuse; Entertain
PASTIME-Something that serves to make time pass agreeably.
HMMM need one more word here as it is common in 2 definitions.
ENTERTAIN-To amuse; Divert (Dang it I hate it when they do this)
So we now have:
FISHERMAN- One who takes or tries to take fish to make time pass agreeably or; be amused, entertained or diverted.
Okay lets now make it simple so we have smaller words and a shorter, easy to understand definition.
FISHERMAN-Someone that catches or tries to catch fish in order to have fun.
I think this works much better than the standard definition don't you? We could put after fun something about an occupation but I think most of us here fit my definition much better.
So we now know that a fisherman catches or tries to catch a fish for fun but is this an accurate definition of a fisherman as a man or exactly what he is or does? I don't think so because we are much more. We are amateur: naturalists, conservationists, entomologists, ecologists, ichthyologists, and so many other things too numerous to list. I think with all this considered that you can't classify a Fisherman as defined above but rather someone who has made a choice to live a certain lifestyle and follow certain paths that enable him to become much more than just a man and much, much more than a mere definition could possibly imply. I don't think you can define fisherman because I feel it is an esoteric term and means much more than words can describe. Of course this is just my opinion and I would love to hear yours.

If you fish at a 45 degree angle are you an angular angler?

Since fish is a transative verb (meaning it has an object) why do we say "I caught a fish"? Shouldn't we say "I fished a fish"?

ANGLER- One who fishes with rod, hook, and line.(Per Funk and Wagnalls)
Hmmm does that mean someone who uses a cast net is a fisherman but not an angler even if the resulting catch is the same? How about those guys that hand grab catfish? I call them hard core fishermen but they are not anglers. I guess even in the world of fishing there are those that feel apart from the rest and must qualify themselves to be set apart from those who are just fishermen. I say it is time to settle our differences and let the doughbaiters unite with the dry fly fishermen, let the bass anglers unite with a carp men and all of us become as one group FISHERMEN with all the majesty and power that implies.
