Do you have a tachometer, and if so, did it also start to act up or simply quit working? Does your engine have a water cooled voltage regulator/rectifier assembly.... OR does it have one of the smaller three wire rectifiers?
Did you or anyone else either install battery cables or hook up a battery charger backwards momentarily?
