What is the flooring made of in the cuddy cabin of my 98 20ft bayliner trophy ?Flooring looks like wood to me. Reason for asking is there are some soft spots that feel like there rotten wood there or something. What are some ways for a reliable repair?

Re: Cuddy cabin flooring issue

Does it look like the one in this thread?
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=431234
Is it the piece of wood that is forward of the step box (not sure if this is the right name for it)
If so, I replaced mine by tracing the wood with a angler grinder with a cutting wheel on it. Be careful with the forward sides when they meet the table base. The right corner (looking forward) is the hull itself not the floor. Once you get the old piece out, trace it to a new one (1/2 inch thick) lay down 2 layers of 1.5 CSM on the bottom. Seal the edges with resin (be generous). Put down a bead of PL construction adhesive or PB. Put down the new wood and tape the edges with two layers of 1708 them glass the whole piece with two layers of CSM.
If any of this is unclear or you need more details, please let us know. Best of luck

Yes you are correct, so you worked on one like mine before? I think i have a good idea of what your saying but i need help with the stuff your using.
Pardon my ignorance here
1) 2 layers of 1.5 CSM - CSM=
2) What kind of resin? will any work
3) how thick of new wood did you use?

Yes, I did the same thing you are doing right now twice. I didn?t like what I did the first time so I took it apart and redone it in the way I described in my reply.
I am not sure what are you asking in question number 1?! Assuming you are aking what CSM is, it is a type of fiberglass fabric called chopped strand mat. 1.5 ounce is the weight of it per square foot. You can read about it ? and order it also if you want ? here http://www.uscomposites.com/mat.html
What kind of resin? Any polyester resin should work but my experience with the Home Depot stuff wasn?t that good. I would recommend you go to a marine store and buy non waxed polyester resin or order it from uscomposites.com. 700 Vinyl Ester Resin is what I ordered but B-440 Premium Polyester Layup Resin should work just fine if you don?t want to pay more for Vinyl Ester. I used ? thick marine grade plywood. Two things to keep in mind, you need to grind wherever you will be adding new glass. Go to home depot and get yourself 40 grit flap disk

and attach it to the grinder your will use to cut the old wood (use a cutting wheel for that not the flap disk). Grind where new glass will be added. Don?t go to town; just take off the shiny surface layer. This should be a paper thick. Once you have a dull red-ish resin with no shine, stop. Your goal is to take the shine and rough the surface so the new resin has something to bite on. Inspect the step box wall on the cabin side ? the one that the floor is attached to ? don?t be surprised if it is rotten and needs replacement as well. Finally, cover everything inside the cabin including your headliner. This fiberglass powder goes everywhere. Wear all the required safety gear (e.g respirator, gloves, eye & ear protection) don?t skip on this stuff. Tyvek suit will protect your most of your body from the itch. Baby powder the hell out of your expose skin (face, nick, etc) this will close all the pores in your skin where the fiberglass powder can find a really nice place to hide and make your life miserable for couple of days.

Hope it helps. Any questions, don?t hesitate to ask. Best of luck
