I have a 1975 Glastron V-179 with an I/O volvo engine. I removed all the plywood flooring because it was shot, and so are the stringers. This boat has 3 stringers. Boat overall is 17', so the stringers are 13-14'. Any clue on cost to have the stringers replaced. I plan on calling around, but wanted to get a best guess idea. Any recomindations in the Houston, Texas area?<br />Thanks. Craig

I think you should research it and do it yourself. You are already halfway there by tearing it all out. You can go to the Project Boats section and do a search on Stringers, or Floor Relacement, anything like that. You could end up paying someone more than the value of the boat to do those repairs when it really isn't that difficult to do. I replaced floor, transom, stringers, and converted the boat to a center console, and did it all for under $2000, which includes the original $800 purchase price. While it had its moments of difficulty, it isn't beyond the realm of the avaerage joe. Talk to a local place that does repairs. I did that, and the guys took me in the back and showed me what they were working on and gave me great advice on what to use and how to proceed.

My brother and I did stringers and floor in his 16ft Grew which entailed us to re-glass the entire bottom of the hull from the inside due to major impact damage, it still only cost him about $800 cdn, that included new carpet and bottom paint and flotation foam.

I have a 1977 Glastron T166 that needed stringer and deck replacement. I did it all myself last winter and replaced all the flotation foam then also. I had never tackeled a job like this before but found it to be easy enough and fun too. When you replace the wood , waterproof it by painting it with a mixture of fiberglass resin diluted to a thin mix with acetone. Paint on about 3 coats so it can soak into wood, then paint on full strength fiberglass coat. Do this to stringers and deck. It will last forever.:D

The cost to pay someone to take that boat from where it is now to "fixed" is about 3x the cost to buy a similar aged and size boat that works. If your engine is OK, then you could sell the engine or find a decent boat that needs the engine or something. OR, fix it yourself.

If it's that far rotted, likely the transom also, btw. Have fun! Many of us have been there, so yu're in good company here.
