Re: Corm, Rectifier??

Hi DrRace,
Sorry I forgot about the red wire,it's been a long time.
The rectifier is coated with a high heat paint. Where it is burnt off is a sign of abuse or failure do to over heating.
It is a silicon rectifier that converts AC curent to DC current before it goes to the battery to charge it.
Test Method;
1) get out your VOM
2)connect the red to the + rectifier tab and the blk lead to ground.
3)note reading
4)reverse leads
5)note reading
6)the ratio of the two readings should be
10:1 or larger.
7)hook the + & - test lead to each of the alternator tabs on the rectifier.
8) note reading
9) reverse leads
10)note readings
11)the ratio should be no more than 2:1
12) the true test is to check the out put at the battery with an amp meter while running the motor.
13) the output of this alternator is around 5 amps at WOT.
If it tests ok dont paint the fins as they will diapate heat much better, unless you ue it the salt. Then paint it.If I remember it was about a $20 option in the early "60s".
Because the ing is a magneto you don't have to have a battery to run it, just rope start it. It is nice to have it working as long as you have it.
