I have to replace my steering and was thinking of changing to a rotory style from the existing flat rack. I have read that it is a nicer system and was wondering what you guts think and what it takes to do the change over.
My steering wheel has a spline that contacts the flat rack and measures 15/16 inches in diameter.

The best way to go is to install a complete steering kit, new helm, new wheel, new cable. I'd go with the newer no feedback system from Teleflex, (NFB).
Most are pretty much a direct bolt on. None of your existing steering parts other than maybe your steering wheel will work on the rotary system.
The NFB systems are nice especially for bigger outboards with a lot of torque.

When I switched mine I think the only thing I had to modify was to make the hole in the console bigger.

The difference is night and day, you will be glad you switched.

actually the dash cutout is suppose to be the same. for both systems. the rotary is much easier to service and install. regular rotary is great.

be aware of the no feed back systems, can be hard to get use to. WHY? you have to turn the wheel and inch or so before the helm kicks in to move the motor, or outdrive. where on regular rotary the motor moves when the wheel does.

i will not use a rack system in my boats.

Thanks for the info and advice. I might be repowering this spring so I think i'll stick with the simplest and replace the existing rack. The motor and leg i'm looking at has power steering and then i'll have to change the steering again.
Thanks again!
