I have questions about my Cobia Sunskiff boat restoration.

1- Is the chopped strand mat shown in the photo acceptable for stringer installation? Can I use this cloth or is it a necessity to use biaxel?

2- The woven cloth shown, is it okay to use for transom assembly and installation?

3- The flat board shown above the keel, is it okay to leave as is? The wood board have rotted away below the heavy fiberglass over the keel. I don't think a new board would significantly add to the bull structure. Your thoughts?

Thanks for any suggestions.

My boat originally had no cloth on the stringer or transom only CSM. But it had alot of it. Biaxel is just cloth with CFM sewn to it and is easier to use.

Woodenglass has a formula in his signature a link actually. Read it. It shows layers of CSM and cloth in layers. CSM holds the resin and the cloth is the strength. I used that. I recommend doing that because it will be stronger. I have alot more glass on what i have done so far than it had originally.

I covered the transom and stringers out of the boat with CSM just to seal it. Then installing them I am using Tabbing then 2 layers of the csm and totally cover them.

The bottom your showing I would drill into it and see if there is water. If not just put a couple layers over it. CSM cloth CSM and cloth or 2 layers of Biaxel which is the same thing.

Compared to what mine had from the factory this is overkill. But personally i want it strong and sealed so I don't have to do this ever again.

My transom is a 1/4 inch thicker than it was originally. It was 1 7/8 and now it is 2 1/8 because of the extra glass I used.

It is all in the work your about to do now. Do it right and pay attention to the details. Details being seal everything no bubbles cover all wood going in and it will last as long as you care to have it with simple care when done.

Thanks for the information. I think the woven cloth with csm I have will work for tabbing in stringers, wish I had biaxel cloth though.

I'll check out the post by Woodnglass.
