I am going to look at a 1985 Cobalt tomorrow. Does anyone know approximately how much boat / trailer weigh? It is 21', 260 HP w/ tandem trailer.

Second question, can one be pulled w/ a mini-van equiped with a tow package? I have a 2000 Montana. The bar is rated for 3,500 lbs and the instruction manual says I can tow that much for a short distance. Anyones thoughts here?

3600# plus trailer, gas, gear, coolers, and the weight of anything and anyone in the tow vehicle.

The answer is clearly NO, your vehicle is not up to the task.

Re: Cobalt Weight

An update. The 22' was trashed on the inside, so I ended up with a '79, 18' Cobalt. Now for the same question, can the van handle it for a short run to the lake...never over 50 m.p.h.? The trailer has brakes.

Re: Cobalt Weight

According to NADA, the boat is about 2,700#. Any educated guess on what a tandem axel Shorelandr trailer weights? It is an '86 and can be stretched to accomodate a larger boat.

Re: Cobalt Weight

If you've already bought the boat, take it (carefully and slowly...or with a stronger tow vehicle) over to the nearest truck stop that has a scale and weigh the whole mess at once and get a true answer. Your life, and everyone else's life that you drive past, is dependent on you getting an accurate answer to this question. It's worth the $10 fee.

If NADA says 2,700, I'd guess the boat is closer to 3,200 to 3,500 with gear, fuel, fluids, waterlogged stringers/foam/transom, etc. Plus trailer....a tandem weighs in probably 800 to 1,000? And be aware that your tow rating is based on a vehicle plus driver, and no luggage. So add another 800 lbs for your overweight friends and 2 coolers of beer you're hauling in the van. Where are we now, somewhere between 4,200 and 5,000 maybe?

No matter how we dissect this, methinks you're overweight and you need a different tow vehicle. But no matter what numbers anyone throws around here, the only thing we know for sure is that we're all just guessing.
