Are gel coats and clear coat the same thing? I know really stupid question, but new to boats, and particularly restoration stuff. How does one know if they are past gel or clear coat and at original paint and if need to apply a protective cover which I am guessing both are (if not same thing)

I'm gonna guess here that your finish on your boat looks bad and dull. Chances are that it is a gel coat only. Clear coats usually are the second stage of the paint put mainly on cars. Gel coats on boats fade and oxidize over time. Adding the some people put car wax on them adds to the problem. Wearing off the gel coat is not normal. It's thick, as finishes go. I sanded mine with 600 grit paper, then 800, then 1000, 1200 and 1500. It took a while to start sanding the colored gel coat. If you go through the gel coat, you will be sanding fiberglass and you will know it.
