I have a Classic 50, 45 horse outboard. It is at the mechnics now having the carbs rebuilt. They called and said the power pack is bad and not firing #2. Is it common for these to go bad, and how much should I expect to pay for this repair?

Hi, Kcogg. One of the reasons this website is so popular, is the price of HAVING an outboard repaired, as opposed to buying the stuff and doing it yourself.
When you chose a shop to do it, you have to worry about the integrity of said shop,it's reputation, and honesty. To answer your question, yes, power packs fail all the time.
Carbs get gooed-up over the coarse of a year of non-use... Did it need the powerpack? Might have, just as suredlly as the impeller will fail at some time. You must trust those you put your equipment in the hands of. I'm not saying you should do it all yourself, just as I'm not saying "I don't trust mechanics". There are 2 local wrenches who can repair my equipment anytime, and I'll trust them without a second thought. But I know them both, and know them well. This was not a lecture on living with the choices we make.
We want to know that our equipment is safe to take out on a body of water, where we can't call for a tow, and be where we were when we called. It's downright scary when the trusty Johnnyrude betrays your trust at sea.
So, leave it in the hands of the wrench, only if you know his reputation of being thurough, and from this end, it sounds like he is making certain your gonna make it back to the dock, after a day of fun.
