I would like to know what the compression should be for a Chrysler 55HP model 5552. (Can anyone tell me what year this engine is?)

I am in the process of checking out my engine to see if it is worth fixing (I need a starter motor).

I checked the compression using a rope to pull start it. I got readings of about 110. Would these be accurate readings? Or would they be more accurate if the starter motor was used?

p.s. Scotiany - you mentioned you had some starter motors. Please email me some pricing info at kelsey.sarah@shaw.ca Thanks!

The model # don't jive with any info I have but could be 68-69. Compression should be ok but using the starter hopefull will jump maybe to 140-150...good luck...just a Thought

Compression is ok but I feel the Chrysler is
a poor fixup prospect.Parts can be expensive
and hard to find. And at its best it is only an adaquate motor.
Parts are easier to find for a 56 E/J than your
circa 69 Chrysler.

Find someone to rebuild the starter. Its not rocket science. The faster its done the more expensive it is.

I had taken my starter motor in to get checked out. The mechanic said the armature was damaged and that it couldn't be rebuilt. Is there a way to get a new/used armature? If so where is a good place to look?

Scotiany,

Compared the pictures and here is what I found out:

I have the original starter motor which is a Chrysler 12v. Hi Torque Starter PartNo: 474955-2, Type: MKW-4004.

Then I had a starter that the original owner was going to rebuild it with (looks like the pictures). Prestolit MGD-4002B-12V. However on this one the Gear part is too big.

Your pictures look like a match to the one I have!
