Chieftain 18 transom question

I am buying a 1967 Chieftan 18 and was wondering if the splash well had to be removed to take the transom wood off and replace it.I havnt picked the boat up yet but when I was looking at it,I thought maybe the metal corners could come off and then take off the aluminum cap and maybe slide a new trnsome in.Im sure taking the old one out shouldnt be to tough.
