I'm thinking a weekend run down the Chatahoochie from Columbus GA ao Apalachicola FL on a 3 day weekend would be fun. A day down a day on the Gulf, and a day coming back. Sometime in the spring. I know it can't be that simple. I know about one set of locks, and a lack of marinas on the river. And the trip upstream will be about 4 knots slower. But what else am I overlooking. Does anyone else want to go?

Sounds interesting. I've been planning on going down the Flint River from Lake Seminole to the Gulf in the spring. It's a really popular trip among pontooners. I know some people who do it every year with a large number of boats; not just pontoon boats. This is the first I've heard of taking the Chatahoochie to Apalachicola. Have you researched the trip? Are there depth issues? My boat has a 56 gallon fuel tank, so I don't think a lack of marinas will be an issue for me. My wife and I have been thinking about the Flint River trip for a while now. You can do the trip in a day; but we were thinking on terms of a day or two each way and one to three days on the gulf. We want to go with at least several boats, so let's definitely talk more about both trips.

I am not worried about water depth. I am certain the barges they push up to Columbus draw a lot more water than I do, or any other pleasure boats. My concern is how slow the trip upstream will be. I'm probably way off on my estimates of current speed and actual river miles to be covered.

Both the 'hooch and Flint river trips sound like a blast! If someone seriously starts putting together a trip post something here or send me a PM. If timing and work schedules allow, we'd love to go! We've got some friends that did some serious looking into the 'hooch trip several years ago. I can't remember now if they actually tried it or not. They might also be interested in a group trip.

Going to check out the 2 links from above.

Jim,

Since they can't do the dredging any more there is not a whole lot of barge traffic left on the AFC.

We'll figure it all out, we'll make plenty of contingencies, it'll look great on paper, and if the only thing that goes as planned is having a great time, fine by me;).

Safe and happy boating always!!!

Blifsey,

A trip down the Flint is already being seriously planned. It's only a matter of putting together dates and times. I figure a month or so out would be a good amount of time to set a date. My wife and I plan on doing this several times per season. We have two sons, seven and two years old. They'll be eight and three by the spring. We plan on sleeping on the boat and bringing a tent, just in case. My son's love the boat so much, though, the tent will probably simply waste some space:D

Thanks for info on the Flint trip. We are near the start of Flint so it is fairly small/shallow. Kind of odd thinking of taking a power boat down it. Heck, in the summer when its dry you can hardly tube it!

blifsey,
My wife told me yesterday That three rivers spill into lake seminole and exit as one. The Flint and Chatahoochie are two of them and I don't remeber the third now. This week or next I'll be beginning to do the research and planning of the first trip. I'll keep you posted.

Jim,
Sounds Like the two different river trips we've been thinking about are one and the same:). Like I said, if all that goes as planned is having a great time, I'm good with that;).

Safe and happy boating always!!!

Thank you. My wife knows more about the area than I do. She's from here. So Chuck, will you be joining us on any of these trips? My wife and I are really excited. My seven year old son can't wait. Keep us posted and I'll do the same.

I'll take that as a yes:D... Looking forward to meeting you and some of the other iboats people I've had the pleasure of posting with. The more, the merrier. It's going to be a really good time.
I recently learned that you need a fishing licence to fish the ocean off Florida:eek:... Never heard of such a thing:confused:. Inland waters, yes; but the ocean? What the heck??? I'll be looking into that. I'll do whatever's necessarry , but :eek::mad:. Do you need a licence to fish the ocean in Georgia too?

Until the North GA Real Estate market comes back we are not spending any thing we don't have to.:(

Not sure about the salt water fishing requirement in GA. Maybe somebody else will chime in or have you checked the DNR site about it?

You need a Saltwater license to fish Saltwater, inside or outside. Be sure you check and follow the rules too, cause they check a lot.

In regards to not spending anything you don't have to... I hope that doesn't mean you won't be joining us. Havn't checked out the DNR site yet. I'll get all the licensing in order about one month out. No point in doing it until then, unless somehow we end up with a lot more than twentyfour hours in a day, and more than seven days in a week:rolleyes:. Not counting on it;).

Thank you nlain. interesred in joining the adventure? Have you done this or similar trips? I've been fishing all my life up until recently. There have always been size and number limits on certain species in certain areas, but I'd never heard of needing a license to fish the ocean or any other body of salt water, such as bays and estuaries. Have times changed that much? Is this limited to just a few states?

Safe and happy boating always!!!

Re: Chatahoochie River

I probably should have said you need a license to fish in Ga, fresh or salt, private pond on your property is exception. If on a charter boat that has license you don't need one but otherwise you do.

I doubt I will make that trip, won't say no yet. Wife has been out of work for 11 months, my hours were cut during same time so finances are getting thin, she is back to work now so hope things will let up a little, we made it this far so up is the way to go now. :D
