charging system upgrade or capacity questions

1979 johnson 100 hp. non regulated charging system. Can this be upgraded to the higher capacity regulated charging system? boat is setup for a second independent battery (not part of charging system, capacity only) with seperate fuse block etc, I planned on wiring radio and anchor winch or trolling motor to this circuit.

Any guidelines on what kind of amperage load my motor would support from idle?

You will get very low output at idle. Plan on charging your Aux. battery from an external source when docked. A deep cycle battery requires long recharge times to get its full life expectancy. Its not likely you will run your engine long and hard enough even if you upgrade your charging system.

Its a pain....

I was thinking about this a few days ago i would fiddle around with a inverter & some how connect it to the dc coming from stator to a battery charger

Re: charging system upgrade or capacity questions

Good morning,

If you leave your charging system alone and install more batteries you are increasing your capacity kinda like going from 12" of water in a bucket vs. 12" of water in a bath tub... you are filling from the same hose. Your charging system being the hose. All of your draws (anchore, lights and inverters, ect.) are like holes in the bucket or tub. If the holes are larger than the fill you will loose water depth. An inverter uses ALOT of power. Now increase your charging system output (if possible?) you can "fill" faster.

Also remember that batteries require more than 12v to charge. Most alternators charge at 14.5V to charge 12v in a battery. Shore power and a seperate battery system is a great idea to make sure you allways have one battery to start the engine and get home. Isolators are fine but also use power to operate. I would just use a manual dial switch to seperate the batteries. Adding accessories can make your boating time more fun. Just research your plans first, its tought to "walk home" when the engine does not turn over.
