The center part, the rubber strip, of the rub rail is inserted in the outer "rail", usually made of aluminum...
To remove it you must remove the rubber insert, then behind that you will find either screws, rivets, bolts or whatever fasteners the Manufacturer used to attach the aluminum rail to the hull...once you take those out, the rail will usually come off, but it may be held in place with a marine type sealant, which you will also have to separate...
This is one of those projects that are easier said than done...if the rubber is in good shape and is still pliable, you might get it all out with out tearing...if you are careful removing the fasteners and sealant, you can get the rail off with out any damage...
Take your time and you can reuse everything except of course the sealant...
