Anybody in MN plan on going fishing may want to check with Gander Mountain or the DNR website.

Just stopped by the fishin store and was talking with the clerk. With the govt shutdown you can't buy a license as of now. I was telling her that a friend hadn't bought his yet and we planned on a Mille Lacs trip. She pulled out a bulletin that had a list of lakes in MN that will be catch and release only for walleye until further notice, so figured I'd give a heads up.

Here's all you get at the website. Was on it a couple of days ago.
http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/shutdown.html

I plan/planned on going up to Vermilion musky fishing tomorrow. No license, I'm screwed. Grandpa and my daughter can still fish. I may still go up and play guide and enjoy the scenery.

Shutdown on 4th of July weekend. Biggest weekend of summer, brilliant!

Haven't heard anything about catch and release on Duluth's local news.

I just went to the MN DNR site and this is what it said about fishing:

3. What are the implications for a shutdown to anglers?

Licensed anglers can continue to fish. All existing rules and regulations will be in force. A mid-season walleye fishing regulation adjustment on Lake Mille Lacs will be delayed or cancelled depending upon the length of the shutdown.

Looks like if you have a license you can still catch and keep to me.

I guess the C&R is for the ones that didn't get their license in time.

I thought it was illegal to fish without a license, whether it be catch and release or catch and grease

We just went through I90 in MN a couple days ago and all the rest stops were closed. 300 miles and hope you don't need to take a leak :D The first rest area in SD was a mad house, I wouldn't want to be the person cleaning up that place

With all the govt services closing down in MN, how did it affect the lakes and state parks?

Yep, you need a license to fish.
State Parks shut down a few days ago. All the campers had to be out by 4pm that day.. Lots of vacations got hosed..... Heard a bunch of campers were going to head to WI.

Road construction came to a screeching halt too.....

Those people can't fish, period........

I just did a little more research and you're right. Looks like it's gonna hit nonresidents the hardest, not sure why a resident wouldn't already have a license. Also looks like this is going to take a big bite out of MN. tourism dollar with all the state parks closed. Who would be so brilliant as to shut down a facility that is bringing capital in?

Our brilliant guvnor shut down just about everything that attracts money to Minnesota. The lottery, state parks, DNR licensing, etc. It's about the budget. go figure.

I didn't take the handout she had, I'm going to call Gander Mountain tomorrow morning and will update. Maybe she misspoke, but she seemed pretty convinced it was C&R only.

I am also sure with the rest stops being open you can get the info for fishing and boating too. If all the pamphlets aren't gone. Also i know residents can buy a license on-line. By the way this looks any US or Canadian resident if good to go.
heres the link: https://apps.sd.gov/applications/gf82/login.asp

Applicant Information

If you are not a US or Canadian resident, you must contact a storefront to purchase your SD license. All Required fields are denoted with an *.

The User ID you create here is for one individual, and allows that individual to manage their license privileges. After you purchase a license, DO NOT use the Back Button to to change personal information to purchase a license for another user. Your privileges will be assigned to the new individual. Always use a unique User ID for each individual who buys a license (log in as a new user)."

Called Gander Mountain and the customer service guy had no clue about the catch and release thing, so I'll assume it isn't true. Then again, the customer service guy today also didn't seem to have a clue in general. Nobody seems to know anything about the handout. Guess I should have taken a copy myself.

It's not just the governor -- all the state reps need to share the blame, too. Partisan politics at it's finest!

Not exactly sure what she was talking about, but You can not catch and release any other time with out a license, not sure why the govt shutting down would change that, it was well covered as to when the govt was gonna shut down, so if you didnt get your license before that happened then you are S.O.L. YOU can not fish period with out a license any where in the state of MN.

Re: Catch and Release only in MN due to shut down.

Talked to my buddy last nite in the very SE corner of Mn, he said according to the Star Tribune, the DNR Cpat. instructed their personnel to only issue warnings to people who are fishing w/o a license.
Just found the article:

Wish I knew this 2 days ago when I was on Vermilion. I was a good boy and left my musky box at home....

Re: Catch and Release only in MN due to shut down.

Looks like the shutdown will be over shortly. Their Govnur agreed to a deal. Just needs to be voted on which should be just a formality. Gee, maybe I, and hundreds of others, can buy a fishing license now! Wonder how many people already cancelled out on vacation plans and how many resorts are taking a big hit?
