I have read that you take chicken livers adn blend them with weaties to form a paste that will help keep the bait on a hook. And I have tried wrapping it up in a *****hose. Any other suggestions? And what if I use something like Kellogs Frosted Flakes the "paste" up the chum? Do you guys think that the sugar will help or scare off the Cats?

one way to keep the bait on the hook is to get some cheese cloth, mix up you bait, cut the cloth to fit put your hook into the bait then wrap with a single layer of the cloth, use OLD ice tray freeze then go fishing, frozen bait is easy to cast and stays on the hook longer.
Luck

The livers are a sure bet. When I fish the Ohio River for Blue cats I go to petland and get a few good size gold fish. I soakem for a few seconds in the nastiest smelln concoc I can brew. Tailem and let them go their way and free lance around until ole blue gets a smell........

interesting tip Koda. gonna have to try that one!
an old guy once told me he buys cheap "tuna" flav.
cat food cans, cuts holes in them, then lowers it
to attract big cats... never tried it and not sure
it's legal??? seem to like big dead minnows here.
good luck,
M.Y.

In order to answer your question I need to know a few things. Are you looking for small "eater" sized cats or the big boys? Flatheads, blues, chanels or bullheads? River or lake? It all makes a difference what baits and such you use also what catches the small ones right and left may not intrest the big boys and some baits for the big boys may even be as big as the smallest cats you catch.

Re: Cat tactics and other ways to say "Here kittie, kittie"

Took my 3 year old to the river a couple of Saturdays ago, thought we'd catch a few perch and maybe a cat or two while we burned a few hours waiting on his mother to get her hair done or something like that. I usually fish offshore, but I'll fish anywhere. Dug some frozen squid out of the freezer (left over snapper bait from last season) purchased some night crawlers and arrived about 7:30 am. Caught 8 channel cats in about 2 hours between 3 and 6 lbs... All caught on squid suspended 2' below a bobber drifted along the fast side of the opposing bank. Could have probably caught all 8 on the same piece but changed it out a couple of times for good measure. Squid was not smelly but rather fresh and stays on the hook far better than a liver or a cornflake. My favorite bait for cats till that morning was freshly cut shad, have caught plenty of blues, yellows, and channels on it before and it also stays on the hook. I've never had much success with "stink" baits, and I'd stick with something marine related if you ask me, no chicken liver or Bill Dance catfish weenies. Another trick (i've heard of) is to soak your shad or squid in Anise extract, I've been told that it's like catnip to catfish... this may be just a wifes tale, personaly I'd stick with fresh squid or shad....

When I go for cats I just put the liver right on the hook. I usally cut the liver in half and thread the hook through the tough muscle part of the liver. The rig we use is simple slip an egg sinker on the line then tie on a swivel, hook a snelled hook on that and your good to go. We pull in channel's in the 2 to 10 pound range.

I have used chicken liver many many times and had great success with it. You need to check it often though, it falls off easy. But who cares it's cheap.

Thats an interesting Idea gonfishn, using carp {goldfish} as bait. Over here that would be totally illegal in many areas, even if the fish were tailed. We are getting paranoid over here with the way carp are taking over the few sweetwater rivers we have. Insidious damn things they are. It also punishable by fines to release any carp caught in the course of your normal fishing.

Auslez

Big chunks of deer liver. Tough as nails, very bloody, and catches fish. Keep fresh bait on....

Hey Chum I "heard" that chicken liver works the best becuase it smells the most. But I am gonna try the deer liver thing ( it might smell just as bad.

Ok all you catfish guys and gals, try this the next time you go catfishing.

Take 1lb. of hamburger and a 12oz. box of wheaties and a tub of pig brains, yes, pig brains and mix it all together.

Might have to use more than the 12oz. box of wheaties to get the right consistency you want.

But I'm telling you bait it up on a 4/0 hook cast out and don't lay the rod down, just hold it in your hand and be ready.

If there are any cats around, it don't take them long to find it and take off with it.

It's the blood and smell of the brains that does it.

And yes, them gold fish for them big blues and shovelheads.

Re: Cat tactics and other ways to say "Here kittie, kittie"

Okay, I have to say something here that may get me in trouble. Hands down there is no bait, bait concotion either man made or natural that will beat fresh cut bait(any fish that was still breathing when you cut it but some work better than others) for catfish of any size (the exception is flatheads which prefer the same fish live but will take cut). In point of actual fact some baits only attract the smaller sizes of catfish and will not catch the bigger ones or even certian species of catfish. The only thing that can possibly come close to making the claim of an ultimate cat bait is blood baits. By this I don't mean those you get at Wally World but those made from fresh blood (usually chicken) that is processed into a jello like substance. If you insist on using chicken livers only use fresh ones and hook them onto the hook a few times (trebbles come in handy here) and give it a soft lob cast. If the bait comes off use ***** hose to wrap the bait to hold it on the hook. Change this and any catfish bait every 15min or so because fresh bait is better than washed out baits. I will guarentee that if you start using FRESH cut bait and change it regularly your catch rate will improve as will the sive of fish you catch.
BTW a tip here do not hide your hook point in the bait rather let it be exposed. A catfish is used to feeling hard things in it's mouth and ocasionaly getting stuck by say a fish's fin so it won't matter as much and will increase your hook up rate. This is especially importiant if you use circle hooks.

Sir Peterfishbuster:
I like you advice on better ways to land the bigger cat. However I must ask......how do you know a cat is used to feeling hard things in its mouth?? I know the darn things talk when you land them but I can't understand a single word they say!?!?!?!? :D :D :D :D

Re: Cat tactics and other ways to say "Here kittie, kittie"

Well cats eat things like small fish which have sharp dorsal fins which can poke thier mouths; Snails, clams and other crustaceans which have hard shells; crawdads/crawfish which by nature are hard; and they eat numerous other things that qualify as hard or pointy which means that an exposed hook point would be percieved as just another piece of the food. What spooks cats more is line drag/unnatural weight agianst the line. Most catmen fish a tight line to thier bait which is necessary in a current but in slack water in a lake or pond having some slack in the line to allow the fish to run a little is better.

Re: Cat tactics and other ways to say "Here kittie, kittie"

for years I have used a method of keeping chicken liver on the hook that works quite well. I carry a spool of sewing thread in my tackle bag. Just whip a piece of thread around the bait a few times.

PFB, not to sound rude here, but maybe in your neck of the woods, cut bait is fine, but here in Ky and also across the river in Ohio, I will put my homemade catfish bait up against any bait going be it for big or small cats.

I have caught them in 40 and 50 pound class with it and also in the one pound class.

I also have a 104# to my credit at Hidden Valley Pay Lake in Ashland, Ky.

I have also used cut bait, live bait, even small catfish for bait, but have won more money at catfish tourneys with my stuff than with anything else.

It is just like bass fishing, I catch them on what I have cofidence in.
