Is contact cement good for laying new carpet? Also would 6x20 be enough for a 18ft bass boat.
I measured the current carpet which was 5.5x15 worth of coverage. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Carpet replacement

ive done this to a bass boat before and i cant remember the cement i used but it was recomended to me at lowes and the 6x20 should be enought as long as your boat isnt more than 6ft wide and just a note before cutting flip the carpet over and use a chalkline to lay out where you will cut each piece it doesnt have to be exact id cut it a LITTLE big as you can always trim but never add hope this helps... also if you carpet wraps around the sides on the compartment covers dont forget to allow for that

Re: Carpet replacement

Contact cement is good adhesive, but it difficult to work with when laying large pieces unless you have a fair amount of experience.

I just used 6'x30' of vinyl to cover my 17' Tracker, but it is a deep V. You need to figure for some waste and your stepup/downs and sidewalls... I'm pretty sure you'll be buying more than 20 linear feet.

Re: Carpet replacement

Thanks for the info. One thing I have going for me is that I have no carpet going up the sides and step downs. Also I have no trim around the carpet--would silicone around the edges be forth anything?
I think I will have my neighbor help me (he is in the carpet business and has done a few boats) he recommended the contact cement and has use it before so I have that going for me.

The Home Depot Roberts 6700 adhesive worked well for me.

Re: Carpet replacement

there is really no point in putting silicone around the edges it wont make it look pretty at all or anything it will serve no purpose just cut the carpet as close as you can always use a sharp blade and never speed through it the more time you take the better it will turn out and if you were gonna put silicone around the edges for water purpose again there's no point cause marine carpet is made to get wet it inevitable that it will get wet this is why boats are made with drains and bilge pumps lol :)

I had EXCELLENT results with 3M super 90. Spray one side, spray the floor, press it down, dry in 10 minutes and it's a bear to get off. I HIGHLY recommend it.

Re: Carpet replacement

zop.......were you able to stretch the carpet once it was down?.....like kick it to the corners? or just cut and lay?

that is the only problem with contact cement...you cant move the carpet once it touches the substraight.

Re: Carpet replacement

I did it starting in one corner, laid down a bit, let it set, then I could stretch teh next section. and the next. and the next. ETC. It worked very well and got up in all the corners. NO I don't work for 3m lol

for the edges buy "glue down" seam sealer (not white latex) from a carpet supply store. tell them you also need exterior glue to carpet your back porch. usually comes in a metal bucket, like a bucket of roof patch, stinks like hell, use the proper spaced trowel. spreads like caramel...wear a glove or the trowel will blister your hand from trying to spread it. cut an 18" scrap piece of 2x4 and round off the edges with sandpaper, a file, or a router. this will serve as your 80# roller. use the board to apply pressure for glue transfer and to lightly stretch as well as remove bubbles. i'll post more to help you out but i gotta go. fyi, 20+ years exp, master flooring mechanic speaking. get the right glue and we'll go from there.

Re: Carpet replacement

I just used the 3M 90 last night. Once its down it will not slide. Works good but you have to have a plan. Like Zop says.

Re: Carpet replacement...

other methods and adhesives will work but if you want it to be there forever...it can be. i'll help regardless of the method you choose. first step is to find a carpet supply store then go window shopping. there are many rubber trims and transitions that can be used on the edges. these would prevent any raveling or delamination...but so does the seam sealer. your preference. i'll keep an eye on your thread.

Many thanks--I still have a couple of weeks of fishing to do--so it will be a winter job. I am researching the carpet right now--but will probably go with what my neighbor can get for me (will be pretty inexpensive) but will have to see---also does anyone have a feeling on having carpet with rubber backing or not?

Re: Carpet replacement...

A rubber backing is not a good idea IMO; the glue (what ever you decide to use) will only bond onto the rubber, and over time the rubber will dry and crack breaking the bond to the fiberglass. Magic carpet ride anyone?

Good luck!

Personally I would stick with an exterior carpet glue that is troweled on; any low spots, nooks and crannies will get filled and give you a high percentage of bonding surface. Not knocking any of the other suggestions; but I tend to stick with tried and true methods that I have personally used and had perfect results. Plus you have some working time to stretch and seam the edges... Just my .02? (that ones for you WOG :) )

Re: Carpet replacement...

Lowe's has in their carpet section, outdoor section, a grey marine carpet. It Is rubber backed and I Have used it several times with great results. One time on a boat and still in use 12 yrs. later. I just use the waterproof indoor/outdoor carpet adhesive there as well.

Re: Carpet replacement...

Good thing to think about--my neighbor said not to use rubber backed as well--so we'll see what we can get--seems the adhesive is the most important part of the process.
