I'm thinking of buying a Carolina Skiff, can anyone tell me how they ride/handle rough water. I'm thinking of the original flat bottom not one of the sea chaser models. I'm on a very limited budget

Popeye,
To answer your question....
Slap, Slap, Slap, Bam, Bam, Slap, Ouch, Bam , Slap, Slap, Aghhhhh.

Other than that, they're really pretty fun.
Are you looking at a center console model or a basic tiller model. I like the CC models personally and have been in a few of them in rough water. You will get wet, and its a bone jarring ride in the rough, but because of their design, they feel pretty stable. I wouldn't venture far offshore, but if the winds kick up along the coast, you should be alright.
Nav.

PopEye, I see alot of those skiffs in Morehead City, NC and they seem to do ok if the chop is 1' or less. But somedays the inlet is so churned up by a howling SW wind and the wakes of 50' sportfishers that crossing the inlet to get to the shallows on the other side looks real uncomfortable, if not downright dangerous. Like navigator said, they are great skiffs, but you have to watch where you take them. I prefer a skiff with some sort of V entry.

wet wet wet wet wet wet wet wet. Also, not a rough water boat at all. 2 yrs ago off grand isle LA, a skiff took a wave over transom returning to shore (1 mi) in relatively calm seas, flooded boat, listed to side, foundered, 1 person drown, 1 survive.

I don't want to say anything bad about Carolina skiff. GREAT BOATS for the intended purpose. Running NC tidal shallows, and beleive me, there are lots of them. Problem is, somebody gets a 21' skiff and starts thinking its OK to go out the inlet. Some days its alright, somedays people drown. It is no more the fault of the boat than it is the fault of a gun in a hunting accident.

Carolina Skiffs are good boats for what they were intended for, and I am sorry I disrespected them!

Agreed, they are excellent durable boats for what they are intended for. Widely used down here by many commercial shrimpers, crabbers, oystermen, crawfishers, etc. There are always those who will sometimes take boats where they dont belong, myself included. Sometimes good fortune prevails, sometimes not.
