Carb Rebuild Leaking at Bowl Seal?

Hi Guys,
Last year i was having a few issues with my 93' 90HP evinrude when trying to get my holeshot in WOT. It would rev up, then die, then rev, then die, then finally i would hit my hole shot.. pretty crappy.. so this spring I decided to rebuild my carbs...
So yesterday I got the chance to finally do my rebuild.. So I took off my 2 carbs on my 93' 90HP evinrude... Extreemly simple! Went to my BRP/Evinrude dealer and got the OEM kits, very small kit, no idle needles no thing.. just gaskets..
I opened my first carb (bottom), and found that 1 of the 2 freeze plugs popped out, and i assume was just dumping raw fuel into the carb body.. explains the hard starts, rough idle, and the really bad holeshot.. So.. got the dealer OEM kit.. took all the old gaskets off took off hte float and needle and seat.. got some good compressed air, and cleaned her all good. Installed the new seat, needle and float.. looked at it.. float was level with the carb body.. put the new gaskets on, and firmly tightend the screws..
Second carb (TOP).. opend it up, took all the old parts off.. and found the 2 mains were slightly gummed.. cleand with air, and new gaskets..
So.. HERE is the problem.. Put the carbs back on.. insatlled the VRO and air Muffler.. buttoned it all up.. went to prime the carbs.. and *sniff sniff*.. What the hell.. Fuel just leaking from every gasket!! WTH!! BUT nothing from inside the carb! So the float and needle are working..
So.. now i'm pissed.. i take everything apart.. in the dark i might add.. look at both carbs.. all the screws are tight as can be.. fuels lines have all new tiewrap clamps on them.. So i re-install them.. prime them.. and now its only a drip.. but they are still leaking!! WTH!?
Do these gaskets need time to "set" or are they crap of OEM parts? Like I said.. they are very very simple to rebuild.. i've done more complicated ones on my MERC inline 6.. and they never leaked like this
Any suggestions?
Cheers Fellows!

Any chance that the bowls on both those carbs are plastic? They first came out around 1989. Not sure if your carbs might have been made with plastic carb bowls. If they are-they warp over time and must be replaced. The flat part of the bowl warps and won't lie flat against the carb upper body. Put the bowls on a piece of glass.

Hi emdspmgr,
Yes these are the carbs with the plastic float bowls.. I'll take them out again and look to see if they are warped.. Do you think my BRP dealer will have these bowls? Or could I use a thin film of gasket maker and try again?
Thanks for your help

Re: Carb Rebuild Leaking at Bowl Seal?

If you order the same part number bowls, BRP will convert the order to replacement aluminum ones. The large (main jet) in the bowl can be transferred from your old bowls. The new bowls will come with the drain plugs. They will not come with the small jet in the bowl, the mid jet. You'll have to pull it out and take it to a dealer. You'll need the same size, but different threads to screw into the new bowls. Sounds like a lot of work, but you'll like the results.

Re: Carb Rebuild Leaking at Bowl Seal?

Thanks for the advice emdsapmgr! I'm going to look into it this week! Now i've developed a different problem... I decided to "ignore" the fuel drip and go for a test run yesterday. Got her in the water, she fired up right away.. got off the trailer.. let her warm up for a few minutes.. then went to mid throttle, and she wouldnt plane.. so i went WOT, and never came close to WOT RPM of around 5000. All i could get was 3900. So i stoppped, took of the cowling, and saw the control cable wasn't bottoming out.. so i adjusted and tried again.. still 3900. Looked again, and adjusted the carb butterfly to open more. Still only 3900, and no planeing, unless someone goes to the bow to "level" the plane.. and still on plane, with full trim only getting 4100RPM..
Anyone have suggestions on how to adjust her to get WOT RPM?
Cheers

Probably lost spark to one cylinder. Time to check spark.

So i took your advice daselbee, and took the cowling off.. and low and behold! the spark wire on the bottom left was pulled right out of hte boot!! It must have happend when i went to adjust the WOT stop, and put the cowlin back on.. i knew i force it, but didn't look at the wire!
Its very weird that I never even noticed a misfire or anything... she was still running really smooth! I'll have to fix the wire, and take her our again next week and see what the repaired wire, and adjusted throttle will do!
Thanks everybody!

Good. Hit the water.

One other gotcha....watch the placement of the lower cylinders' plug wires. They can arc to the cowl latches and cause poor running.

I can't help you with all that you have going on here but I did notice one thing. For future reference when you have gummed jets you need to use a solvent to clean it out, carb cleaner works good. Just air and/or gasoline will not remove that gum.

Sounds like you are not working from a service manual. When you get into doing a sync and link (ajusting the relationship between the spark advance and carb throttle postion) it's always best to work from a genuine Bombardier factory service manual. The offbrand manuals just don't measure up.

Exact same thing happened to me on Lowe plug wire while offshore. I sat out there thinking what I might have done last. I too had the wot problem so I took cowl off to investigate with no luck but putting
g it back on I remembered having to force a latch. I found the pulled out wire and just jammed it in place for TB
As it would not start on 3 cyl. Wire fixes easy don't buy new one
My wot problem cleared up after running several tanks of high ratio seafoam through it...great stuff. Been running fine at a work of 5500 but I usually cruise at 4000-4500
