Can't get into reverse

I recently purchased a old starcraft falcon 14 ft aluminum boat with side console and old style rope steering. Not sure of year of boat. It came with a old i beleive 1963 merc 300. I need to find the bracket for back of motor where the steering spring hook-up. Also cannot get reverse gear will almost go in. Wondering if there is some sort of reverse lock-out. I do not have the pin in that adjusts the trim. Have not purchased one yet. Would that pin not in cause it to not go into reverse. This is my first boat.

I am assuming this motor being so large has a remot.Have you checked your cable for a kink?Also there is a bracket which is located under the front of the motor on most motors,it is there in order to keep you from over reving the motor in neutral.chech out this bracket as it may need a slight adjustment.just pull the lever as far to reverse as you can and look at the bracket.at the bottom of the throttle tower bar and see if it is catching.
