According to Bill Dance your best fishing is when the barometric pressure is falling or at its lowest which normally is the front proceeding a storm system. If you have falling or Low pressure with over cast skies associated with a west to east breeze or viseversa you have a better chance than with rising pressure and a sunny sky. ;)

Crab Bait
I hate to disagree with Bill Dance but my fishing Barometer says "Falling or low fishing Least, Rising or High Fishing Best". I have fished same lake several days in a row and can tell you this when a Cold front or low pressure first moves in I hav had trouble catching Bass.

Re: can someone please explain...

Who looks at that stuff. Personally I like to fish just before a front moves in so I would have to guess this is right before the barrometer falls through it bottoming out. Of course this is late spring/summer/early fall any other time I like it to have had a few days of nice warm (relativly so) stable weather before I head out. So I would say here it is rising or high.Hope this helps but I bet it is not quite the answer you wanted.
BTW the best time to go fishing is when you can and I intend on having time to go this afternoon and could care less what the barometer and such are as long as it does not look like rain.

this has always been a 'gray' area for me.. an others alike..

it just seems it a 'gross contridiction' .. droppin'/low equals 'cold front'..

cold front BAAAAAD... then why droppin'or dead rock bottom barometer the best..??

my experiance.. a beautiful blue bird day ,, 'stay the hell home'... only good for a boat ride... that's a 'high' ,,,right..??

i so confused..!!!

It has also been my experince that the falling barometer is a positive sign but this does not always mean cold front just a presure change. However the bite also seems to pick up on or after the third day of a steady high but regardless i would not let the barometer predict a fishing trip.

with fish ya never know guess thats why they call it fishing not catching

Re: can someone please explain...

generally I have to agree with the falling pressure argument. Fishing is a funny thing sometimes regardless of the weather conditions fish are off and then it remains the choice of bait and presentation. Fish even when completly shut off will hit a bait from agression so I tend to use weather as my deciding factor to bait and presentation selection

This has been around for a loooooong time:

Wind from the North, don't sally forth. :(
Wind from the East, fishing is least. :(
Wind from the West, fishing is best. :D
Wind from the South blows the bait in the fishes' mouth. :D

I never check a barometer but from my experience the fish bite terrible right before it rains but during and after the rain the bite is on.

Re: can someone please explain...

Much of our fishing depends upon the condition of the water in the rivers and streams; doesn't matter what the pressure or the wind is, if the river is out of shape the rascals will never see your lure. Further, on the Columbia, the tides make a big difference...outgoing being the best.
That being said, when a east wind is blowing briskly, I have flogged without success many a smaller river for salmon and/or steelhead; as soon as the wind changes (which means a high is being replaced by a low), the fishing gets better. I suspect that when a high first gets here, the fish hunker down....but eventually their migratory instincts won't let them stay for long, and they start moving.

I NEED ALL THE HELP I CAN GET.!!
WHO CAN'T...

highs & lows ,,if i understand them,, always seemed a 'contridiction' in itself..

i always heard/felt/an abide by.. sunny blue bird day,,, HIGH,,, fishes air bladder fills up an fish got a 'bloated' stomach.. therefore,, not hungrey/not feedin'...

of coarse,, that don't stop me none.. i 'always ' have a bloated stomach.. an can still wolf down a large pizza...whats the problem... ;)

Re: can someone please explain...

yo crabbie - just IMHO. back a decade ago, when i fished @ 200 days/yr in the swamps. the shallow water lakes seemed pretty moody. maybe because Moody AFB was right near by, dunno ;)

anyhow, it really was a great time to fish when the rain clouds were moving in, or just nearby. as long as no lightning, the fish were tearing it up.(well, i was still there to observe what the fish might be doing) and would continue for a while into the rain. when it got bad enough to cloud the water - it died. same results when we went down to FL- kissimmee area a few yrs ago. it seemed to rain every day for 30min on/ 45mins off... tore them fish up! avg 6lb lgm bass.

not up to speed on these big hilly lakes yet... but i'd hafta say i do better just b4 the rain drops out ;)

I leave the barometer for the weather man on TV, and I try not to watch the TV weather.

There is always some kind of weather outside, when I go fishing. (I haven't found a place to fish inside yet.) Sometimes the sky is blue, sometimes gray, sometimes it is black, but there is always a sky up there somewhere.

I look for water to fish in, and only fish when the water is wet. :D

I just like to go fishing when I know the woman is going to get the maddest at me for going. Then also when my boys can't stop bugging me about going. Jeez I think I go fishing to get away from all of them. Maybe I just fish to much?

Re: can someone please explain...

best time to go fishing is when you have time :)

I have seen some fish go nuts when a low pressure is coming through and also seen it where the bite just shuts off. I also find that the bite shuts off once the front passes through. Maybe its just me or maybe the fish don't like me after it rained
