I live in Nebraska and was fishing a 25 acre sand pit lake. It's deepest point is around 17 feet. The weather here is starting to warm up. A few 40's and 50's lately. We had a 65 degree day Saturday so I went out fishing. It was extremely windy. The water surface temp was 47. The only fish I saw on the finder were in 15 feet of water, suspended 2 or 3 feet below the surface. There were no fish in 12 feet of water or shallower. Is this normal? I was drifting a minnow on a bobber and throwing a spinnerbait. Clarity was probably about 3 feet. Just want someone to explain to me what fish these were and what they were doing. Thanks in advance!

Whatever fish are in the lake, looking for warmer water and oxygen after a long winter. Probably not feeling real chipper yet.

fish tend to be very sluggish in under 50 degree temps. Usually fish will move to warmer creeks and channels in a slow and apparent manner. They are waiting for the spawn to begin. Usually smaller lakes with crappies and bluegills those fish will move to spawing grounds when the water hits 50 or so. those fish down there are just being lazy. Remeber there cold blooded. Theres plenty of oxygen in the water this time of year due to rain and rising creeks. However they are not ready to spawn. I live in south western PA. Yes i want to go fishing now but i wont start fishing till the water hit 46 or 47 degrees. Smaller lakes warm faster than large ones due to the rapid turn over of the water. The crappies and bluegills should be on there way to making there spawing beds now where you live. I would fish in 5 to 7 feet around structure. The crappies should be there getting ready. The gills spawn after the crappies. There gona be in a little deeper water but still kinda sluggish,They will need some coaxing to hit. Maggots waxworms...Good luck.
