Can I use my 2 stroke in CA after 2006?

Just bought a new lease return motor, Merc 9.9, and spent a pretty penny on it. I obviously bought relatively new so I could keep it maintained and have a long and useful life.

I now hear that in California 2 strokes will no longer be allowed on the lakes starting in 2006??!!!!

Does anyone know anything about this? Please tell me I didn't just spend 1300 on something that will turn into a dust collector in the garage, or that I will have to resort to traveling out of state to sell the **** thing so I can buy a 4 stroke!

I'm hoping it is just on the import of new two strokes, and not the use of existing.

Any links or info GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks

If I read the regulations right 10 horsepower or less are going to be ok.

Where are these regulations available for reading? I am just about to buy a boat with a 25 horse 2-stroke that is pretty much exactly what I wanted. As a second choice I saw a smaller, bare-bones boat with a 15 horse 4-stroke for a couple-hundred more. But I really like the first one. Don't really know how many lakes I will likely be in, but the option would be nice. I will spend 90% of my boat time in the Sacramento Delta area, which I heard will not be regulated as to 2-stroke motors. But I sure would like to find out for sure!

I've hada customer who was kick'd off his lake in Ca. Were not able to continue to use their two stroke motors. Said that the local dealer "offer'd" to trade in his 2 stroke and give him $200.00 towards a four stroke. He came up to the Pac. N.W. and I gave him $2100.00 and sold him a 115 4-stroke. I'm not certin that this was just on particulat lakes or all lakes. He said that the enforcment police were tooling around in two cycle PWC's telling two cycle outboard people to get off the lakes.....

P.V. - Only in California!!! I have heard that some of the lakes that are used as drinking water sources are off limits to 2-strokes - in fact a new local reservoir has banned any i.c. motors and requires electric or manual propulsion.

actually it was Lake Tahoe that started this situation , the state then followed through and tried to start a state wide ban, it was fought in court and ca lost, however if I remember they won the appeal on a lake to lake basis, I really beleive that this will spread across the country, just like the special interest groups want to disarm police oficers. There are a lot of groups that are watching and gearing up to fight the legistors if and when they try to start banning. I always found that calif and N Y seem to be the ones that start trends. :)

Well, I read that link to the CARB regs, and really find it hard to argue with.

And, I have a 1960 outboard that is a "gross polluter". OK - they don't want it on certain reserviors - that is reasonable - I wouldn't want to drink my thick oil exhaust either.

But, they aren't banning it in general or banning it's resale, just enforcing standards on new production. Where is the problem here that some owners are up in arms about?

Thanks for the information. Now I can rest easy, until certain lakes start banning them....

Well that's the thing. As time passes more and more lakes in California are apparently rejecting 2-stroke motors greater that 9.9 hp. How can we find out what lakes are currently banning them and which ones are soon-to-be?

Let's face it. Because of MTBE ,you can count on pretty much any resivoir or natural lake that supplies drinking water to the public to be eventually banned. That won't leave much out here.Free flowing rivers and the ocean and a handfull of isolated lakes.Sad that we are forced to run this crappy, unstable, and now unhealthy fuel.I could go on and on but I need a Tylenol.

There have been some resivoirs here in the state of California that would only let you in with a boat under two conditions.

1) empty tanks and willing to fill up at the lake itself where they had filled their tanks with, and were selling only MTBE free gas

2) a reciept showing that you had just filled your boat tank(s) at a pre approved station nearby the lake that has ciontracted to provide MTBE free gas.

WELL TO MY KNOWLEDGE LAKE TAHOE WAS ONE OF THE LAKES THAT STARTED ALL THIS MESS IN THE FIRST PLACE , AND NOW GUESS WHAT THEY ARE RUNNING ON THEIR BOATS THEY USE TO PATROL THE LAKE AND KEEP OVER POLLUTERS AWAY . IT IS A TWO STROKE EVINRUDE FICHT NOT A FOUR STROKE . NOW AIN'T THAT KICKER THEY FOUGHT TO GET RID OF THEM AND NOW IT IS THEIR MOTOR OF CHOICE. I GUESS THE TWO STROKE'S AIN'T SO BAD AFTER ALL .

had the same problem in Md, reservoirs could not use gas engines of any size, Md DNR used Johnson 150 2-stroke to patrol the water, we complained and the following year they came out and used 200 Johnson 2-stroke ---go figure there just ain't no justice. :)

I don't think that only part of this has to do with drinking water, most of this has to do with control. they original tried to ban PWC but could not, the only way they could get rid of the PWC was to ban 2 strokes. they were considered too noisey, people having to much fun, too dangourous, you know the whole communist and socialist campaign. the people in control are the biggest hypocrites in this whole thing.

California sucks - plain and simple !!!

Since many of the 2 stroke bans on lakes in California gave little forewarning to consumers, is the state of California going to reimburse owners of late model 2 stroke outboards for the purchase of a new 4 stroke O/B?

I am not an expert on the subject but I thought that you could use the old 2 strokes (except for the outlawed lakes) but the manufacures could not make the engines that were the old technology. but they change the laws all the time that could change too.

Andy
