While pulling the kids on a tube this weekend a loud buzzing started (and then stopped about a minute later), coming from the throttle mechanism. I can't find a reference in the owner's manual....this is circa 1977. Does anyone know what the buzzing means and how worried I should be?

Highly likely the overheat alarm. Is the engine locked up? does this engine have a tell-tail?

May want to slide this thread over to the J/E forum.

Overheat alarm. I am surprised the switch in the powerhead still works, but I guess it is a simple heat switch. With that said, if it is bad then you are out of luck to getting it replaced cheaply (Find parts that don't cost arm and a leg). Temp is supposed to be ~140 for mine (1977 790 HP Evinrude) guessing yours should be similar for the same era. I chose the option of installing a temp gauge so I could monitor it my self.
