I have a 1994 75 HP 3 cyl Mariner with a broken/worn skagg. I have seen various types of skag guards made of various materials. Some of the products claim they can be used to repair as well as protect the skagg. Does anyone have knowledge of these devices and do they work. My skagg is broke on the trailing edge about 3 inches long by about 1/2 to 1 1/2 inches.

Have it welded if it's now shorter than your prop. The pupose of the skeg IS to broke when you hit something. If you put a Skeg-Guard or something similar made of stainless steel, the next time you'll hit a rock the skeg won't broke but you'll bust your power trim or, worst, your transom.

Don't agree.

I have used SkegGards on several boats. . .both to repair and to just protect.

They do exactly as advertised. If you hit something (I have hit rocks on plane) the outboard kicks up, drops back down, then resumes with no damage.

My opinion is that one of those is a far better investment than another fragile alloy skeg.

I agree with you if you use them on outboards without power tilt & trim. Thoses engines will kick up if you hit something. But on thoses with power trim that can't kick, the pump or transom will have to absorb the shock...

Look at a black fin replacement. It is a carbon fiber replacement and sold online at Bass Pro shops. Put one on couple years ago and still on the lower unit. Notice an improvement in low speed wandering and hole shots. Lots of the pro fisherman are using these. I have hit bottom couple times since and it stayed on.
