After countless problems with 2 older (one nearly prehistoric) outboards, I finally bought a brand spanking new kicker for my sailboat.

I have never broke in an outboard, and want to make sure I do it right. The manual says to use a 5 hour break in. The sales rep where I bought it, who seemed very knowledgable, said a 1 hour period is fine.

By the book its 0-10 min at idle, 3 hr at about 30%, 2 hr at 60-70%, then off you go to full throttle.

the sales guy said 15 min idle, 15 min 25%, 15 min 50%, 15 min 75% and 15 min 100%.

I usually lean to go by the book, but just thought I would ask the experts...

thanks!
-Bryan

Bryan L,

First off, welcome to the board!!!

The "Salesman's" job is to sell you another outboard in a few years :p

Go by the book since you seem like you are going to keep it a long time!

Not following the factory break in procedure may also affect the warranty.

Enjoy the new motor :)

Nav

Bryan L,

The manufactureer has a vested interest in you following that book, they have to warrant it. They wouldn't go through the printing and distribution expense if they didn't think it was worth it.

Congrat's. Enjoy!

Go by the book, and even after the 5 hr mark do not stay at any one speed for to long of a time until you get a few more hours on her. You get a better break in on a new motor if you vary the speed during the break in, this would go for the time before you reach the full throttle mark. ie when you hit the 30% mark vary the throttle from idle to 30 and back and not just leave it at 30% for 3hr's.

Ditto with all of the above. You can never undo a "too short" break in period, the damage is permanent.

Use the 5 - 10 hours to take a leisurely cruise around your local area, and you will not regret it.
