I just took out my recently purchased 2005 Rinker Captiva 232 for the first time today. It has a 5.7L MPI engine with a bravo III drive.

The belt driven raw water pump has a slow leak in it. It drips about 2 drops per second. I've had an old boat with an alpha one drive for years, but I don't know much about bravo drives. Is it common for the raw water pump to leak? I'm hoping that the guy who de-winterized it just forgot to tighten a hose clamp, but what else could be causing it to slowly leak like that? I guess it could have frozen and cracked the housing as well.

Thoughts?

Nope,.... Nothin' should be leakin' in the motor box,....

The raw water pump has seals, 'n o-rings that go bad,....

Could also be a loose hose clamp,....

Probably oughta pull it, 'n rebuild it,....

If its leaking behind the pulley, the pump needs to be rebuilt/replaced. Rebuilding is fairly easy but does require some tools. In most cases its not this issue.

If its leaking from the housing, it can be fro the large O ring or a crack housing if you have the plastic housing. The housing will last a long time without issue but need to make sure not to over tighten the bolts.

Last place is a hose clamp. Could be the hose clamp is not tight enough or is cracking. Suggest taking the clamp off and have a look before trying to tighten

My Bravo water pump started leaking after about 6 or 7 days of use......but it was a flood. The entire plastic housing cracked! I only noticed it because my bilge pump came on!

(and yes, I probably overtightened it!!)

I replaced it with a Hardin Marine stainless steel pump. No more plastic pumps for me!

Well, I think I got lucky this time. Both of the hose clamps on the aft end of the pump were fairly loose. The top clamp was way to far aft, and not properly seated on the "barb" of the inlet. I re-seated the clamp, tightened them both, and it fixed everything.

My tachometer was inop as well. I pulled it, shook it, banged on it, and re-installed it. It now works 4.0 as well.

All in all, I had a pretty lucky and inexpensive day of maintenance!
