Just bought a brand new Merc 25 hp 2 stroke. Ran it through one tank of gas to break it in. When I decelerate from full throttle I get a growling or almost a grinding whine, is this normal for a Merc ? This is the first Merc I've owned.

Thanks

Any idea where the sound is coming from?? The lower unit, the power head? I have the same engine and haven't noticed any sounds that are unusual.

When in doubt, take it back. If dealer sez it's o-k and something turns loose later, you'll have documentation to back you up.

c/6

Hooty

The noise seems to be coming from the lower half of the motor not the powerhead. But I think taking it back sounds like good advice but I will wait a while as I have a 1 year warranty. Just thought maybe this was a normal Merc sound.
Thanks for your input guys.

Czar, I wouldn't wait, I'd go on and take back.

Don't know if this helps but I have a 25 Mariner 4-stroke and if I decelerate quickly or cut the motor while the engine is in gear and moving, I will get a clicking or rattling noise. I discovered that it was the sound of the prop turning and the ratchet clicking at the prop due it turning as the boat moved. All normal.

Actually after listening to the noise it is more of a whine than a growl. It sounds like something winding down and only happens on a rapid deceleration so maybe it is the prop just slowing down. Will investigate further.
Thanks
