Have 1986 Merc. 90hp. having carbs done and thinking about putting reed valves in, I've been told I will receive quit a benefit from doing this. More top end, quicker whole shots, better gas milage... Can anyone back this up? and there has to be a down side, is there?

Re: Boysen reed valves or NOT ???

This is 2nd hand info, but perhaps it will help. Fiber reeds are used in high rpm applications. Usually 6500+. For speed junkies they are needed because steel reeds will break when pushed that hard, that spells disaster for your Merc. The Fiber reeds will fatigue much quicker than steel ans as a result need to be replaced with some frequency, steel should last you 1,000s of hrs. By themselves Fiber reeds aren't going to make your boat perform all that different, esp at 90 hp ( it is the rpm increase that does it). You should be in the 5500 range with that Merc @ wot. Another 1000 rpm and the rest of that engine will get un- happy. That old 86 inline is one of the best they made, I believe it is the same as the old 1150 before the HP ratings changed. I have burnt an old Merc and did it because I pushed it too hard. That 300-400 extra rpm was fun till a hole blew through the block...
If you are going to push it use the best gas and synthetic oil, and run it at 40 to 1 instead of 50. That will keep it slippery.

There are lots of different opinions out there, but with that old Merc I would run it as close to spec as you can

Re: Boysen reed valves or NOT ???

kevlar3000,
Thanks for that insight... Ya I like my old merc. and she has a little balls for what I have her on (93 starcraft) at 5000 rpm I cruse at 35mph and thats fast enough I am a speed junkie... Just sold my 69 Firebird (she was a racer).
While I was into this I was think'n of getting a little more out of my merc. but if getting a little now will hurt later than I might PASS!!! Thanks man, I will do some more research before I say go ahead with the new reeds.

I think you could run another 500 rpms with no probs and get several more mph out of her.
What prop are you running? It might be worth while to drop some pitch to gain some rpms. Should get you in the powerband you need to be in to get to 40 mph...

Re: Boysen reed valves or NOT ???

Hello Rock,
I have a 17 ft. bass boat w/ a 1985 90hp merc. I have replaced the lower unit with a 1985 115, it fit perfect and I now get up to 6000 rpm at WOT (47mph). It seems to be wound up pretty tight. I rarely run it WOT, but I get a better hole shot now.
I am very happy with this old motor. With the exception of a charging problem.
Does yours charge fine?

I just don't under stand how one day running great next day all three carbs are clogged??? but have great compression, good fire and plenty of good fuel... That's Y I'm into the carb thing right now, never done any carb work that's Y I toke to shop...
