Hi everyone,

Thanks for all the replies to my question on the Dania Cutoff Canal. I have one more question about the area. Has anyone ever been to boatsmans park. Evidently its located North of Griffin Blvd, west of anglers ave. Would like some directions and info if possible.

Thank you very much,

Re: Boatsmens park/Dania Fl

You may be referring to a stretch of public docks on the inside of the loop on the Dania Cut Off arm, right near the airport. It's a pleasant stop with a path along the water including picnic and restroom facilities. There might even be a recreation area for kids too, but I can't remember for sure. We've tied up there a couple times to stretch our legs. You can tie parallel to the canal at the docks and climb up a ladder to the park, but there is at least one place where you can tie up to a small floating dock perpendicular to the canal in a little cove. I've never seen any other boats tied up anywhere at the park, but you can't miss it 'cause you can see/read the welcome signs from the canal.

If you're looking for a place to 'go ashore', consider the little lagoon at John U Lloyd State park. The entrance to JUL is less than a mile south of the Coast Guard Station off the main ICW. Turn east off the ICW into the boat ramp basin and go straight under the little bridge to beach your boat in the sand. It's a very protected area and with a 30 second walk across the spit to the ocean.

EvinSFla.. Not much help here :( , but I believe the park is off of Sw 30th ave, which is about 3/4 of a mile west of I-95 off of Griffin rd....

Don't know when your planning your trip, but I get down to Dania and Lauderdale area from time to time, so next time i'm down that way I'll make a note to check out the parks location...

http://inshore.com/ has a listing of a bunch of ramps in south Florida..

Nick....that lagoon is called "Whisky Creek"..where the famous "Murf the Surf" of the Star of India robbery murdered someone. Used to have beer parties there 33 years ago before it was a park. Used to be able to take a boat from the port entrance area all the way back to the Dania Fishing Pier then back into the intercoastal. Gotta git there early, the creek is lined up with boats gunwale to gunwale beached, lunch/refreshment stand there too..

Snapperbait - I've used http://inshore.com/ many times to find FL ramps. My all time favorite is Bahia Honda State Park, a great base to explore the Keys:
http://www.bahiahondapark.com/

Pennekamp on Largo is good too, especially for activities in the Underwater State Park:
http://www.pennekamppark.com/

For the New River-Dania Cutoff loop we like Robert E. Houston Park...and it's almost within walking distance of the Dania Marine Flea Market:
http://www.thedaniamarinefleamarket.com/
Everyone ought to do that Marine Flea Market at least once!

Lloyd is an exceptionally nice ramp, but they won't allow you to leave your truck/trailer overnight. Our choice ramp for overnight cruises in South FL is Crandon:
http://www.miamidade.gov/parks/Parks/crandon_marina.asp

FlyBoyMark - We've noticed the lagoon at Whiskey Creek keeps going to the south, but never tried heading that way. And we've never experienced any traffic in Whiskey Creek - but then we usually go there in the winter.

Our Stripers @ Whiskey Creek
yep nick..thats the entrance under the bridge in the back ground from Port Everglades...the creek over the years from hurricanes and storms has gradually filled in somewhat with beach sand. Last time I was there you could take a small boat all the way through at high tide(about 15 years ago) They used to have canoe rentals on the creek a while back. The first time I went all the way through was in an 18' wood rental boat boat with a 40-60 hp in the early 60's when I was a kid.

There are also some really nice large freshwater canal systems in the south Floirda area too that can take all day to tour each. Crystal clear water to tanic and lots of bass and peacock bass. The canals can handle most all bass boats and most flats type boats up to 20'. Bridges are the issue for taller boats.

Lake Ida/Osborne chain and associated canals in Boca to West Palm Beach(good 30-40 mile system), C-100 canal system in Miami/Cutler Ridge (crystal clear water and about 20-30 mile system though very scenic neigborhoods) Snapper Creek system in Miami and about 10-15 mile system, Holiday Park end of Griffin Road in Fort Lauderdale for the serious bass fisherman and gator/wild life watcher(easy 50-60 mile system) There SEVERAL others in the area plus good ole Big "O" about 50 minutes from my house in Weston west of Fort Lauderdale. 'Course once your there in the lake, there's all kinds of historic and wild life things to see plus you can cross the state via St. Lucie canal and Caloosahatchee River to the west coast. The ole' Kissimmee river to the north that rambles around swamps, farms, cattle farms cities, homes and through a ton of other lakes for several hundred miles or more of navigable water for larger boats to Orlando almost.
You must keep in mind, walk-arounds won't fit under most of the bridges in these areas, 14-18' run-a-bouts or up to 20' bass boats. All these systems are fresh water. I have lived here in Florida all my life and have tried to see as many of these lakes and canal sytems and I have only seen a tiny inkling of them, you can easily spend a lifetime jus' exploring all of Florida's lakes and rivers. Another day I'll talk about the really senic lake systems in Orlando and Winter Haven with the million dollar homes and the cypress trees all around them with cystal clear water.
I fergot to mention, all these lakes and canal systems have a large amount of parks to stop at and picnic or jus stretch your legs during the journey.
