The wife and I spent this past weekend on Lake Erie. Everything was great. My basket case boat performed well (I still don't trust it since I rehabed it). Once we got back we noticed these 2 ladies sitting in a slip next to hours. They were there when we headed out to do some walleye fishing, so I figured that they had gone out and got back before us. So naturally being social I asked how they did out on the lake. The one ladie said everthing was fine up until they were ready to get up to speed to head out to the Islands (Put-In-Bay). She told me that she pushed the throttle up all the way, and all that the boat would do was make alot of waves behind the boat and that her temperture gauge would go all the way across the guage. But at about 1500 rpm she said the temp would come back down. Her speed would only get up to 8 mph. I saw that she had the engine cover up, It was a 350 Mercrusier, so I know in this 18 footer should be fine on power. The boat looked practically new. I think she said it was 3 years old, and that the people who sold it to them said it was a fast and fun boat with no problems whatso ever. It was a EBBTIDE boat and a very pretty one at that. We were sitting to their stern side. So while I was looking at the back of their boat, I noticed two straps trailing down from the ski rope eyelets. I asked her if she knew her hold down straps were still attached to the back of the boat. She said yes she did. I said well I'm not telling you what to do, but I would remove them so that they wouldn't get lost in the water, plus once you do start crusing, the straps will beat the heck out of your boat. She replies, "Well if I take them off, the trailer will come loose". I go "What do you mean the trailer will come loose?" She said that the trailer was still on the boat! Sure enuff, looked up front by the bow, and just under the surface of the water, you could see the winch tower! They didn't appreciate the fact that everyone around that was listening to our conversation began laughing their butts off, including my wife and I. I said Lady, you park your trailer, and your boat will be fine. I just wish I was there watching them launching it, because they said people there was laughing and pointing at them. Now she said she knows why! She did take the boating safety course, and did seem knowledgable of what she was to do. I told her about this forum and that I was going to post it. She pleaded with me not to. Well, I'm SORRY !!!! I couln't resist this one.
