Okay so our boat in my sig. shuts off just about everytime we shift into reverse. One mechanic said probably the shifter cable.

Any suggestions on how to diagnose the problem before I remove the drive shaft. There are two shifter cable's and i'm not to sure which one may be it, the upper or lower causing the problem. Anyone know of someone's write up on how to do a replacement if the shifter cable is the problem??

Lower shift cable. Disconnect at the engine and shift directly with the cable. There should be almost NO resistance. Really, hardly any. Do a search, tons of info on the subject.

Bad lower shift cable. Replace the shift shaft bushings with the new style (not sure what year the change was made) to help keep water out of the shift cavity. Water will kill your new cable quickly.

Think the change was made with the Gen 2's, my '89 gen 1 had older style. Good advise for both to be be replaced.
