This is my first boat, 17' aluminum, 40 hp Merc, and I've been dying to take it out(had it a year, between DMV, shoulder injury, work travel, family - no time to take it out yet). So, I get it running great, new batts., chg. lower unit oil, get boat education, etc. Last Friday night couldn't sleep - get up to tinker at 11:45 pm, started it for maybe 5 seconds - boy is that loud in my enclosed garage! - wake up wife(Ooops!) and she comes sleepily in garage to ask what the hell I'm doing "you'll wake the neighbors", yadayadayada as I explain to her that when that 40 hp Merc starts right up on first try at 2500 rpm, it's music to my ears.....bad answer I guess......here comes the good part.... <br />Saturday afternoon, I figure I need an outboard dunk tank, I fill up old 30 gal garbage can, duct tape the cracks, etc. to make it "water/leak proof", drop motor in it, fill w/ water, start engine - again it immediately cranks right up and is almost as good as sex. I kinda forgot I'm running 32:1 mixture so it gets a "bit" smokey in garage......I open both doors to get clouds out...ummm.....well the washer/dryer is in garage with rack to hang up clean clothes, the awesome water pressure of motor(I'm so proud of my Merc)starts "slightly" spraying all things in a 10' radius.....the "leak/water proof" dunk tank starts "seeping"..dang that duct tape shudda held!startin to look like flood possibilities..wife rushes in garage choking a bit, rips all clothes off rack, spys slight water control problem and storms back into house, shaking her head violently from side to side, muttering something. <br />"Oops".. I finally get all somewhat under flood control, later explaining to her about defective materials, the unknowns of mechanics, etc. After she calmed down a bit(talked to my sister in law) and voiced the fundamental differences of the male & female personality, she asked if it would be safe to light up a cigarette while wearing "pre soaked" clothes - I told her I thought so and to give it a whack and let me know... hmmmm....another "Oops"? She was sure awful quiet the rest of the day.....Boating sure is adventurous! LOL , Heinz
