The owner's manual says that I should see my dealer if the oil is black. What is the significience of the black motor oil look and smell? Thanks

Re: Black Oil in Lower Unit

Hello
Black oil means ya struck gold :) :)
nah, black oil is an indication of 2 things. one is something is causing excessive heat in the gear case or 2 the maintenance schedule needs to be more closely adhered to. try changing the oil at 50 hour intrevals or at least once midseason. I dont know how much your boat is used. it could also mean on other thing. some shops and one factory uses a Molybedenum black grease that will forever stain the oil. if the oil smells burned you may try a synthetic like the volvo penta GL-5.
good luck and keep us posted

Re: Black Oil in Lower Unit

Rodbolt, thanks for the reply. It takes a lot off my mind. I just rebuilt the pontoon boat after having bought it in June. Your answer tells me that the previous owner just didn't change the lower unit oil as often as he might should have. Again, thanks. IraO
