I know many here have lost one.... or several:facepalm:

And we have all heard the saying "so and so would make a better boat anchor"
soooo...

What bizarre objects have come in handy in a pinch?
What home made concoctions have actually performed?

Re: Bizarre Boat Anchors

Not many that have worked...

I used to use a 1/2 gallon jug filled with concrete for my canoe, worked OK.

I was at a pro wakeboard competition and one of the spectator boats kept blowing into others, he finally cut the line and left. The line (ski handle) floated back up and I pulled up three receiver type hitches complete with balls, heavy as **** but obviously not a good anchor.

Finally, I have used a cast intake manifold from a large tractor (inline 8) as an anchor for a mooring buoy, havn't lost it yet!

The most effective boat anchor is debt and large, unpayable repair bills. With those, the boat ain't moving!

I've seen all sort of crazy cement concoctions for mud bottoms, with a big ol' eyehook sticking out.

I always thought it would be fun to pull into a harbor in my 100' yacht with a custom painted and beautifully polished harley dresser.... every possible overpriced chrome or polished accessory, bags block tires and fuel tank filled with lead hanging from a polished stainless chain on the bow...... Would be very poor at anchoring the boat but would be excellent for making a statement. LOL

The glastron I just bought had a 20# dumb bell under the back seat. I guess it was something that wasn't being used. Don't know how well it worked tho.

In highschool I used a cinder block on our 20' webbcraft. Worked well but was super ghetto.

Not too crazy but used an old fashioned window weight on my old 14' aluminum boat. If it went straight down and stuck in mud it wasn't going anywhere and was a booger to pull up!

Lots of old v6 and v8 engines for moorings around here, and I know of one mooring that was made with a couple of kegs filled with concrete, chained together.

I've also found a sidewalk slab that used to have an eye bolted thru middle of it, the steel has rusted away. its sitting on a smooth sandy bottom, kinda funny swimming along and coming across a sidewalk in the middle of the cove.

I recall friend of our family doing that when we were young... it worked and it was free!

+1 on the cinder block but I only used half of one.

The best canoe anchor I ever had was a 5 lb sledge hammer head with a foot of chain welded to one end and a plow point on the other.

We dropped a stripped Olds big block 9 miles off the beach. 10' of SS chain thru the cylinder and 100' of poly rope with a styrofoam crab trap ball for the float. We would drift to it and tie off to bottom fish. One day the ball was gone but we never dove the spot to retrieve the line. :(

In a pinch anything heavy will do, kind'a. I grabbed a rock off the shore once and lashed the anchor line onto it. Worked OK for a small boat...

To prevent drifting in early spring on the Delware River we welded a big eyebolt to the bend of a forktruck fork.
WAAAHOO
We NEVER drifted again.
2 of us lifting that 80# +- V, was fun.

Hillarious, but I forsee one problem. The harley will inevitably leak like a sieve and you will be hit by the EPA with an oil discharge fine!

Re: Bizarre Boat Anchors

friend was trying to use a 20# dumbbell as a secondary anchor on his 23'7" funboat. too cheap to just buy another sand anchor. needless to say, he was in the water all day adjusting it haha.

I've helped toss a couple old engine blocks in the water as moorings. one was a 4-bolt chevy 427 block that cracked down the lifter valley. was a shame really, very rare block but it was junk none the less.
