I bought a 16' 1979 crestliner with a 100 hp outboard. i recently boght a bilge pump with install kit but i am unsure where to drill the hole for the fitting that accepts the pump output line. Do i go as high above the waterline as possible? or do i keep it at the same level as the transom hole that drains the outpboard "pocket" where the engine turns tilts etc

thanks!

Does the pump have an automatic float? It should...
I mount my output hose fittings on the same side as the helm so when its running I can see the water coming out. If it runs and no water comes out, stop and investigate.

its a pump so it is able to push the water . locate it up high a couple inches below the rub rail. you dont want water coming in

Mount the outlet as high as possible, AND route the hose so that it goes uphill from the pump as high as possible, then downhill to the outlet. That'll help keep water out.

Re: Bilge pump output localaction

Good info, but the last one I did I cheated. I bought that clear hose with the string in it that will still flex some without kinking. Since my boat is off white, I ran it out under the steering cable/fuel line/wiring in the well, then zip tied it to the motor clamp. I can see/hear it, is only a 16' boat, and you don't really notice it there since it is mostly clear hose and partly under other stuff. I was going to just let it pump into the well, but thought if any oil/dirt/gas was in the boat I didn't want it in the well even though the motor drips a little oil once in a while. I also used the clear water tubing for the pitot and ran it next to to the trim pump on the motor clamp (white motor) and that blends in well too. Otherwise yes I'd drill it just under the rub rail on the driver side, long as it is above the water.

Just an FYI... When researching bilge pumps, the corrugated hose is common, but actually has a large reduction on flow (gpm). Smooth bore hose is highly recomended. I used the smooth hose in my install, and due to the design of the boat, I had to add two 90* elbows. Elbows add some restriction too, and should be avoided if possible, or use a "long elbow" or two 45* elbows that have less restriction.
