I have a really big canoe. It's 23 feet long. A couple days ago I stumbled across a 35 hp Evinrude really cheap. I can't stop myself.

Any advice?

Make sure your "affairs are in order" before you do that.

Be sure to keep the turns very wide, or better still post the video

Post some photos of your canoe and you will get better advice here.

Is it a square-stern canoe? If not are you using a bracket?

Typically 3-5hp for canoes, but a 23' could probably do fine with 10-15hp.

Anything more than that and I want to see the video too:D

I'm curious, with enough power, does a canoe "plane out"?

I had a 10' tinny when I was 12 years old. It was rated for a 3.5, therefore I put a 10hp Scott/McCoulough on it. :D

A friend of my son's put a 140hp (I think) motorcycle engine in a 12 footer. Said he was afraid to go over about 70mph.

P.S. He's still alive too.

Depending on what type of canoe you have exactly, you would be amazed at the motor you can use and the weight they will carry.Hears a link to a canoe with a rating of 40-60hp !Also if you look further on their site you will find a freighter canoe that can go up to 100 hp.http://www.nor-west.ca/html/canoe/canot_artic_en.htm The average boater doesnt really understand how powerful these canoes are and the job that they do in the far north is nothing short of spectacular! They have been depended upon for many many years in many communities.

I understand now....wow. I could have a blast around here, it would be like my moped passing a Harley. I can see myself passing a big sportfish....blowing the horn......"get outta my way"
