I know that a lot effects the decision, but seems
to me that I always do better with the darker
variations... black, dk. brown etc.
fish mostly muddy water, but even in clearer water
they seem to work best.
anyways, curious what works for you in your area
and why you think so.
trying to get my mind off the cold...
M.Y.

Mellow Yellow - You really opened a can of worms now! YUK YUK. With the soft plastics I have the best all around luck with the watermellon seed color.I fish mostly clear water lakes. All though we all know on any given day they are liable to hit any color. As far as the plastic crank baits go I seem to never go wrong with the firetiger pattern. The firetiger is my go to bait when things get slow. I would think you will have as many opinions on this as there are color worms
---------
Flathead

Mellowyellow--Watermellon seed is kind of a deep darker shade of green with very small black flecks impregnated into it. The bass here take a real shine to it.

In my bass fishing day's, my favorite worm colors were, and still are..

#1 4"-6" Black worm with chartruse tail. Excelent during spawn periods...
#2 4"-6" Tequela sunrise or Red shad worm. Anytime..
#3 this one's #3 because the company (can't think of co. name) who made them is no more, but it was a 6 inch lightly sprinkled with tiny metal flakes, motor oil with chartruse tail... UGLY, but good.. I've used others like it, but this was the only one that did the job...

The one thing I found is that if I'm traveling and fishing un-framiliar areas, my best bet was to start with a plain ol' black 6" worm...

I tend to work grubs mostly and have found that a smoke 4" grub on a 1/8 or 1/4 oz jighead to be the most productive. When that does not work, I will go with a motor oil with green fleck.

Both tend to work well, though I have been told the presentation is every bit as important as the color. Could just be that I am dragging the grubs at the right speed.

Ditto Flathead on worm selection. I am not sure why except that it's color sort of mimics a green colored crawdad but I know it works well. There is also a lighter version that works about as good. This would be my first color choice for average water conditions anywhere. Average meaning not muddied so bad it looks like you can walk on it.

I used to have a great deal of luck with a dark blue or a black worm that had a NON-squigly pink or red tail.

It seems that as of late I have had all my strikes on a squigly tailed chartruse worm with a blood red core....The local wally-world quit selling them too....I've got 3/4 of a bag left.

Do they even sell the NON-squigly type of worms anymore?

Derwood.

thanks guys :) who comes up with these color
names anyways? Martha Stewart? LOL
motor oil? petrol or synthetic? and smoke is
dark grey I assume. at least I can understand
derwood's colors. ;)
seems like Black is most popular, which has been
my best color too.

By sqiugly tail do you mean like a flat twister tail like on a mister twister? Try the yammamoto senko. They have no "squigly tail" and are deadly on bass. Zoom also makes a nice worm without the twister tail.
-----------
Flathead

my favorite color is hands down ,,JUNEBUG.. it changes green to purple with the light..

delaware has many ''PONDS'' but no natural ponds or lakes.. all are man-made mill ponds .. back-in-the-day,, all had mills at the dam/spillways so as to mill the farmers wares & lumber.. only a few still has the old mill still standin'..

average size is 60 acer.. average depht 4 foot.. very clear cypress water.. an full of stumps , lilly pads , blow downs..

they're a blast to fish cause of all the 'stuff' to cast to..if i'm anythin',, i'm an accurate caster..fishin' these ponds since a kid ,, made me.. plus only 'one window'to fish... would mess me up if'n i had to factor in vastly dfferent depths..!!

anyways,, junebug does it for me .. but people like watermelon, pumkin seed, motor oil..

but with that beenin' said .. i also use a bubble gum color ( brite pink )'ZOOM TRICK WORM' .. wieghtless ,, the worm almost floats ,,but sinks very slowly.. flutters down .. ya just barely,, an i mean barely twitch it.. it does some real wild movements..than let t settle down & do it again..

DRIVES 'EM NUTS..!!

when summer kicks in to much subsurface weeds.. everthin' tex rigged plastic..

cause i'm feelin' generious today,, i hook ya's up with my best secret..

when nuthin' works.. i use those tiny trout worms,, ya see in display packs cheap.. white, pink, cheese, red colors..

texas rig a little # 2 hook ,, put a tiny spilt shot on the line for castin' weight..

i've caught my biggest bass on these tiny worms.. sometimes they want a small tidbit..

Mann's Jelly Worms Derwood. I use them from time to time when fishing farm ponds as for some reason they seem to work better(not as good as green). I like the blue and black for that.

My favorite has always been the simple Purple Worm. I caught my first bigmouth bass on a purple worm in a small (about 1 acre) stock pond in east Texas - a 6 lb 6oz bigmouth when I was 6 years and 6-days old... I still remember it vividly.

Those were the days... I would hop the fence with Dad, and we'd fish all day. Now, with my 3 girls, Grandpa gets to do it all over again at his own pond.

Rex S.

I have found that bass aren't really all that selective around here...it's all in the presentation. If it moves right, they'll eat it...if it moves wrong, they look at you and smirk. ;)

really though, I've caught just as many fish on bright chartreuse as I have on pumpkinseed(what is naturally bright chartreuse? Nothing! There is no natural food that is this color, MAYBE a grasshopper is close?).

around here (south tx), they seem to like the soft plastic jerk baits just as much as, if not more than the worms. In the morning/evening, I'll throw a pumpkinseed/chartreuse tailed 'Bass assassin', with no weight..they love it!
Now, when it gets to be 100* outside, they usually go deep and you've got to use a texas/carolina rig...or do your hunting in the shade around the boat docks, trees, etc...

But, overall, the pumpkinseed Bass Assassin is my favorite soft plastic. *HINT*HINT*: It also does wonders on texas salwater fish!

Shawn
