Bent Shift Rod

How do I go about replacing a bent shift rod on a 6hp Johnson Motor?Old rod is already out.

Can't it be straightened ? Or is it bent right where the seal is? A good machine shop can true it up for you,and cheaper than a new one.

The bend is in the middle and it can be easily straightened.My problem is reinstalling it.If I knew how it operated would help.Right now the foot is still attached and all I can see is a hole were it could possibly go,but it seems like it should have something to retain it in that hole if that is were it goes.Yeh,I'm lost.I appreciate your replies.
