I have an '86 bayliner with a volvo penta engine and outdrive. I have a problem with water entering the hull. I was wondering if one of the rubber "boots" on the outdrive could be split. Would this let the water enter the hull? If so, is there a way of checking the boots for leakage? There is no visible tears in the boots. Thanks in advance

Those "boots" are called bellows. If they are leaking you will usually get water in your outdrive. How much water are we talking about? How long have you had the boat? Water will get in there when you drive around, turning stopping.

If the ujoint bellows is leaking, the water will go through the intermediate bearings into the bellhousing and leak into the boat.
Pull remove the drive side of the upper bellows (That is the one for the ujoint bellows) and see if there is water in the bellows. It should be dry.

Don S

Need you again...

We have a 5.7 litre 350 cubic inch 260 hp V8 OMC Cobra. We recently had a short and long block engine rebuild. For whatever reason, we are noticing oil and water leaking through the vent tubes. Compression on all cylinders is fine, same with engine temperature. We are using Marine 30 straight oil. What do you think could be the problem?

Thanks,

Leetbeef9999

You need to start your own thread. This is "claim jumping"

Vipzach, the boat is taking in about 5" of water in a 24 hour period while docked. Would the water still enter through the bellows even while docked? Also, I am assuming the bottom bellows is the exhaust bellows. Could water enter the bilge area if this boot is leaking? By the way, this leak started all of a sudden about two weeks ago. The boat was fine for the first month or so while docked. Thanks again
