Hey all i am kenny and i am very new to boating. I am a repo man and got a 1995 bayliner capri 1950 with a 3.0 for 100 bucks. I have never owned a boat and have only been in boats a few times so im very excited. Is this a decent first boat? It had a soft spot near the ski locker that i am fixing along with new carpet. Dont want to do too much cosmetics till i find out if its worth it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Well its definitely worth a hundred bucks ha ha. Be sure to check the stringers and foam. A soft spot in the floor usually means other underlying problems.

As far as worth.... what engine/drive does it have?

has the 3.0 with a alpha1 outdrive. we had it 9 months before i brought it home. Fired right up. All the fluids looked brand new so i just replaced the plugs. only other thing is the bilge pump. should it come on when i press the swich on dash?

Bilge pump should come on. Did you use muffs connected to a water host when you fired it up? Research replacing the raw water impeller if not.

Sounds like you have a bad pump, or switch. From what I remeber on my 185 there was not a float switch, I installed one for auto on and off.

Good deal on the muffs. I have essentially the same boat and like it a lot (of course, because it's mine).

check and clean all of the wiring connections to the pump (switch connections, splices and pump connections) before you go spending $$ on a new pump...welcome to iBoats

Welcome! Its a decent and popular first boat, and my guess is that if you and the family end up enjoying the water, you will quickly outgrow it, so dont dump too much money in it. The length is good at 19' (ish), but you get more than 3-4 adults in there and you will have problems getting up on plane with that 4 banger. Enjoy, and be safe! Buy some good pull tubes for the kids...its as much fun pulling them as it is riding in the tubes!

good plan. you are already ahead of most. including me when I bought my first boat. oh...wait...nope. I won my first boat in 1988. It was a brand new 1988 Four Winns 160 freedom with a 3.0 OMC Cobra. so...i guess i had less in it than you do ;)
anyway...ask questions, use the search function, and listen to everyone and no one at the same time. most of all, make sure you have a good waterproof camera for the fun times! kodak makes a nice one for $149

well basically it was free. it was a tow away that the owner never came back for. the hundred bucks was tune up and ignition since there was no key

While you are waiting to get it wet, look for a take a boating safety course. You can find them on line or locally thru your local dealers or USCG axillary.

It's best to "have a clue" when you go out the first time. Also visit the ramp at which you plan to launch from and just sit for a few hours and watch. You will be able to spot the newbies the old salts and the ones who just don't get it or care to. (Don't be one of them.) Get your boat ready to launch/trailer somewhere other then the ramp. In and out is the key there.

Welcome the to world of pleasure boating.
