Battery charging circuit and second motor?

Sorry to sound like a newbie but im new to the boating world, just bought a little 15ft-er. I was wondering how the battery remains charged- I have a 48hp 1989 I believe Johnson outboard on it. Is there a circuit in the engine that charges the battery as it runs or should I be worried about it being discharged as I plan to use the radio and fishfinder when the motor is and isnt running?

My second question has to deal with a second outboard if the main one were to over stall in the middle of nowhere and not want to restart. I saw cheap trolling motors (around $100) and thought I could squeeze one beside the main outboard on the transom in an emergency situation to get me to shore, but I just learned that they were designed for freshwater use only and cannot be used in saltwater. Is that true even for an emergency situtation? Like once in a couple of years? And at other times it would be stored in a dry place. What would happen?

Thanks

Re: Battery charging circuit and second motor?

Welcome aboard SUNB15.
Yes, your engine, if electric start, will have a charging system built into it.

If you don't leave anything on, then it should stay charged up alright.

Radio and/or fishfinder will not run the battery down, if said battery is in good shape, except if they are left on.

As far as trolling motors go, they do make a salt water version of the trolling motors and you can check at the bottom of this page to see what they have.

Re: Battery charging circuit and second motor?

it does have an electric start. I did have a look at the trolling motors and there are some not so expensive saltwater ones, but on the same page they have those battery maintainers/chargers. So if i were to put the trolling motor on for emergencies and the main motor was offline, the trolling motor would need a charger/maintainer in line with it hooked up to the battery to maintain the battery?

Thanks
