Awakening another sleeping motor, won't stay running

As the usual story around here goes, boat sat for 2 years thanks to real life.

Gone through the faq. Some things were in good shape as I just had the entire boat gone through by a mechanic, put it on the water for maybe 3 hours before it sat up (under a cover which was under a carport).

Motor is an 89 Johnson V6 GT150. It cranks and starts but only runs maybe 10 secs before dying. When I first got new gas/batteries in it it would run 3-5 secs but as I tried the length of time it would run was getting longer. But not wanting to burn up the starter I figured I'd come here for suggestions.

I will say I didn't replace the primer bulb on the gas line (figured it looked in great shape as it was just done pre set up). I do know I'll squeeze it till I can't build up any more pressure, then after trying to start it has a little give in the bulb. Not so much give that it's empty just not as tight as I pumped it. Perhaps that's normal?

The bulb softeneing when running is normal.
I suspect you have fouled carbs. Tear them down and give them a good soaking in carb cleaner. Blow out with compressed air. Make sure to get every jet, orifice and passageway sparkling clean. The main jets are in the carb bowls. Intermediate jets and idle circuit are in the carb bodies.

Howdy, Injury.

Welcome to iboats. :)

I sort of doubt that all 6 carb throats would gum up at the same time. Sounds to me like something common to all of them: Fuel supply.

Confirm that the tank is well vented, no restrictions in the pickup or fuel lines, no air leaks in the lines or connectors, no water in the fuel.

Disconnect the output line from the fuel pump and put the end in a bottle. Crank the engine over and see if you get strong spurts of fuel out of the pump.

Let us know what you find.

Thanks for the fast responses, gives me stuff to check while waiting on my trailer light parts, and books/manuals to arrive (puppies and trailers don't mix).

Also just occured to me to check what I'm assuming is a plastic air intake housing for signs of Dirt Dauber nests (bow side of the engine plastic thingamajig with 6 large rectangular openings...3 on each side of the engine)

There shouldn't be any water in the fuel. I siphoned out the tank and added fresh fuel (only about 5 gallons just in case I had to empty it again) + some fuel system cleaner additive a local shop recommended.

I don't think the carb suggestion was out of line. I pretty much remember NOT running the lines out last time I parked it thinking "Oh I'll go out again next week no need". So it's very likely that mix sat in there all this time, now how likely that is to foul them all is beyond my knowledge.

I'm guessing when you mention the tanks venting that would be through the overflow hose. Guess I can run a fishtape or something through from the inside (the outside where the overflow spits out when I put too much gas in it has a screen over it).

Anyone that lives in a part of the country where there aren't Dirt Daubers (Mud daubers some call them) can cosider themselves lucky. Finding those stupid dirt nests and knocking them down/cleaning them out is a real pain. I've found them everywhere from the throttle linkage on the engine to the bilge, in the glove box. Pretty much everywhere.

Just a thought....
Did you purge the old fuel out of the line? Sometimes it takes quite a while to work the fresh fuel through on its own....

Cheers,
Snow.

Re: Awakening another sleeping motor, won't stay running

I bought a 1958 Dorsett Pleasure Cruiser for $200. At the time I thought it was a good deal but after a year of trying to get it to run I am about to give up. I have replaced the fuel lines and plugs hoping to get it going. The motor will start and run for around 20 seconds but dies out. It will not restart for a few hours as if it has flooded and it starts leaking fuel around the lower part of the motor (there is a small hole about 1/4" around about 4 inches above the prop that it leaks out of.) I took the boat to the most "well known" boat repair shop in town and was told it would take around $700 to get running but they would not tell me what was wrong. They replaced a large black box on the left side of the motor but also didn't tell me what it was but charged me almost $100. I recently spoke to the guy I bout it off of and he mentioned that the boat was underwater for about 2 days. Is there any hope for old relic. I really enjoy working on the boat but really don't know that much about it. Please give me some help so I don't have to junk out the boat.

Howdy, stain.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Adding a new problem (hijacking) to someone elses thread very rarely gets you any response, and asking for help without identifying the engine involved almost never gets any help.

You need to start a new thread and tell us what engine you have.

Good luck. :)

11. Please do not post multiple threads in multiple forums about a single problem. This is confusing to those trying to help you. Multiple threads in the same forum about the same issue are also confusing. If you want help fast, one thread in the most closely related forum is the best way to get it.

We have very active forums and any thread that remains inactive for that long should be considered "dead". It is especially confusing when there is an entirely new question posted to an old thread. This is considered a hijack. Please start a new thread of your own.
