If I was to run a new haylard line on my boat, Could I just attach the new line to the clip with a knot? would a good sturdy knot like a fishermans bend do the trick?

I hear about splicing the line on there, but is that really nessecary?

A fisherman's bend or bowline will do fine. Seize the bitter end coming out of
the knot to the running part with some whipping twine. The reason people
splice is to reduce the profile and insert a thimble in the eye. GH
