What looks to be the connecticut river. I can see red and green buoys for navigation but have not seen a boat on it in 2 days.

Anyone no what this part of the river and south by Norwich looks like. Is it worth me launching my boat in this vicinity someday and cruising on down towards the mouth? It looks pretty desolate from my vantage point, but beautiful.

Any restaurants that I can dock at along the way. Or quiet coves where we could bring lunch and anchor?

I'd post a pic from my room window of how beautiful it looks but I can't figure a way of copying the link to link it to this thread on an ipad. I can copy the link on a pc but not an ipad?i

Update: when we left today we drove over a bridge that said the river out our window was the Thames river not the Connecticut river.

Thanks for those links Moosehead. I knew that the area near the mouth had activity. As I saw it on a tv boating travel episode where there was a trendy restaurant at or near the marina. The 2nd link was an eye opener in that the Thames in that area is a catch all watershed for all the pollutants coming off the land. Probably not a great area to swim .

One thing as compared to my local haunt, the Hudson River is that from Lake Champlain on down towards the ocean there are many many new york state launches that are free. And many local towns along the route where you can dock and explore each town.

I was hoping the Connecticut river might be similar to the hudson but it looks pretty void of boating activity from my window. it might be shallow where The Mohegan Sun is or maybe it's just a weekday, but it is the middle of the summer. I figured out how to copy the photobucket link with an ipad.

That's the Thames River. It runs from Norwich CT to New London harbor and out to the LI Sound. From New London you pass under the I-95 bridge and pass the US Coast Guard Academy on your port and the US Submarine base on your starboard ( you will be followed and watched carefully by a Navy security boat with a 50 caliber machine gun on its bow so behave) There is in fact some boat traffic but not much and there are only a few no-wake zones. This is a great cruise when the winds are blowing and the LI Sound is rough. The river is well marked and there is plenty of deep water in the channel. The city of Norwich CT is just a few miles further up past the Mohegan Sun Casino. There are a few nice marinas (including The American Warf). There are also very nice town docks that you can tie up to for free and explore the small downtown. Norwich has seen better days but it is still worth a visit. We took friends Saturday evening and had a nice picnic at the waterside park next to the town docks and let the kids run around.
