make sure you have a wide, long ladder. It can be dificult to get back in the boat loaded down with dive gear.

A large swim platform is nice, I normally inflat my bc and take it off and throw it on the swim platform then climb up. Here's a web site that list state by state rules for flag size and there are addition links to that states laws reguarding boating and diving.
www.dive-flag.com

be carefull, not everyone stays away from a dive flag.

It is also probably smart to have a way(radio, cell) to contact a decompression chamber and an emergency medicine center, and research an evacuation method (heliocopter)to get there, just in case of accident.

Depending on the conditions your diving in.If your in any kind of current invest in a floating dive flag + 100 feet of floating line( a ski line works well).A light you can attatch on your anchor line is a good idea also.Personaly I won't dive from a boat that doesn't have a working vhf radio.too many things can go wrong, and you will not be able to get an injured diver on the boat if there is only 2 of you.I'm jealous though...... 4 months before I'll be able to back in lake erie.

Jim

Amen on this one. Lots of boats come with these "1/2 platforms" with an area of about 2 sq ft - even without gear the so-called ladders will swing under the platform. This setup is a joke - barely adequate for swimming - totally inadequate for diving.

I have a full swim platform on my boat but what I do to make it easier is I have a couple of nylon ropes tied off to boat with big spring clips on the ends. First I clip my lobster bag (full - of course) to one rope. I clip the other rope to my bc...inflate it a bit more and remove it...hold on to ladder and remove fins...they get tossed to boat deck. I then can climb up the ladder easily...retrieve the bc when I get onboard.

Required by law..well that changes by state...here you need a dive flag on the boat and I believe you have to drag one with you....not sure...if BOTH are required.

-JustMrWill

And then all you have to do is teach the large number of boaters who don't know what a dive flag means. Of course these are the same people who also don't know what "no wake zone" written in English means, so it's probably pretty hopeless to get them to recognize a flag.
